We caught up with the brilliant and insightful LADYKONG.CO a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

LADYKONG.CO, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?

My family name, Kongmalay, is a bit of an interesting combination for a Laotian last name, and its origins are steeped in romance. My grandparents, who were extremely in love with one another, came up with the idea to combine their family names, “Kong” and “Malay,” resulting in the name “KONGMALAY.”

I shortened my family name to “KONG” for marketing reasons. However, culture’s historic ties have not been weakened. I wanted my business to be a reflection of who I am as a person and of my values as a Laotian woman raised in the United States.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Being a first generation Asian-American woman in America, the only thing that was expected of me was to submit to traditional values and goals while trying to navigate through the obstacles of the modern era. Being a single mother of 2 did not make this journey a smooth one- but I wouldn’t trade the lessons I’ve learned along the way for anything.

A woman embarking on the journey as an entrepreneur has always been interiorized no matter what background you come from- but especially true as an
Asian Woman in America. I got tired of the associations, the stereotypes, the judgements and I decided to change that-to show my fellow women that we are not merely trophies or objects of fetishization. To show them that we can look good and feel good FOR OURSELVES.

I started this business out of passion. The passion and drive to elevate my fellow women and promote self care and self love. Helping build their confidence
doesn’t feel like the 9-5 job I hold. I gain satisfaction in making these women feel powerful and beautiful.

As much as I loved synthetic lashes in my glory days, I couldn’t help but notice that they became more uncomfortable to wear as I aged . My ever-so-sensitive allergies didn’t make the situation any better. My eye make-up would smudge and watery eyes would prevent those lashes from sticking. Inevitably, I became less confident about my lashes since I would always be adjusting them, reapplying glue and consistently looking in the mirror (As if I was obsessed with myself. Haha). I’m sure a lot of my women can relate to that predicament!! I tried everything you could possibly think of to make it work. I had an adoration for lashes that kept me motivated to solve the problem (they say pain is beauty, right?).

I tried using new face lotions since I thought perhaps the cause was oily skin. I tried every brand of eyelash glue available. I even took a chance with eyelash extensions. You can say I tried just about anything and everything, yet my eyes were still watery and my lashes were still coming off throughout the day. You would think the world would have blessed us with an easier way to stay beautiful!

Until one day I came across “Mink” lashes and realized I had spoken too soon. I had heard about Mink lashes for a while, but honestly could not work up the courage to be impulsive enough to try them and I was stubborn to change. I was aware that they were not as inexpensive as synthetic lashes, but after rationally thinking about it, I realized that for my whole life I had been tossing my synthetic lashes at the end of the night since they were so uncomfortable to wear anyways. The accumulation of the cost of these one-time- use synthetic lashes did not weigh out. So I figured why not give Mink a try?

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?

My prior experience as a model and a freelance makeup artist for premier modeling agencies means that I’ve been able to experiment with a diverse range of lash styles. Those who know me well realize that I place a high emphasis on aesthetic quality and presentation in regards to the goods I sell.

Each aspect of my product, from the materials used to the design of the box it comes in, has been meticulously planned. My Mink lashes arrive in a durable magnetic case keeping lashes intact after every use so they can be reused ten times or more and features a complimentary lash brush to keep your lashes clean and dust-free.

My lash company stays up to date with current trends and styles, which now seems to favor styles that either give a more  natural appearance, the added volume perfect for parties, and the dramatic lashes.

If you’ve been looking at other lash companies, you’ll find that mine are the most cost-effective option. I offer different tiers of price points as they relate to how enhanced the customer likes their lashes and the varying price ranges make it so that anyone can afford quality. My extensive collection ensures that there is a lash suitable for everyone. The same pair of lashes that I sell for $8.00 can cost upwards of $15.00 at a beauty convenience store.

I make it a point to prioritize quality and customer satisfaction over “profit.”. My clients really value and appreciate that. What really matters to me is that they get the same level of quality as they would at a high-end store without having to shell out as much money.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
