We were lucky to catch up with Lacy Porath recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lacy, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
When I began learning calligraphy and letterpress printing, I remember having a clear end goal in mind. I wanted to be the best. I wanted to know it all. I just wanted to be successful. But as I look back on the past 7-years of making a hobby into a full-time job and business, I am reminded there is no end goal. I am always learning and growing, and failing, and working harder to get better and better. And at the end of the day, I just really love what I do, and want to do it for as long as I possibly can!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi! I’m Lacy Porath – owner, creative designer, and letterpress printer at Collective Script.
For a little over 7 years now, I have had the most incredible opportunity of living out my dream as a stationery artist. From calligrapher to handmade papermaker to letterpress printer and designer, I get to combine all of these loves into one exciting and creative career.
I began by making everything and anything for friends and family and anything they could possibly think of. As I started getting better, I started charging for my services. In time, my skills grew and so did my confidence. Before I knew it, I was starting an LLC and making beautiful work I was really proud of.
I now offer fully custom and semi-custom letterpress wedding invitation suites, sell products, teach classes and print for other designers.

Be sure to say hello!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The art community is by far the most rewarding aspect!! As much as I love to see progress in my own journey, I thrive to encourage other artists and new creatives who want to start or share their art with the world.
This community is so gracious, loving and encouraging. I feel inspired every single day to create, no matter what I am going through or how heavy the world can sometimes feel. There is space for all of us to be creative – and to share our work. And when we get that opportunity, we can truly inspire others, and even impact their lives.
It has truly been a gift!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I know we’ve all heard this before, but it’s truly never about a destination we are hoping to achieve- but the journey, lessons we learn, and friends we make along the way.
I promise you, I am grateful for every time something has gone wrong or unplanned. Of course, in that initial moment it’s no fun. But later, I can always benefit from those mistakes and make sure they never happen again. I learn more from what goes wrong then what goes right. I take those opportunities to learn, grow, and become better. If I’m not failing, then I know I’m honestly not trying that hard.
My advice to you is whatever you are thinking about trying, but maybe scared of failing in- try it anyways! If it doesn’t work out, you will have no regrets because you at least tried.
And if it does work out, it just might be the best thing that’s ever happened to you!!
