We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lacy Elam a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lacy, appreciate you joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Adventure Lace Photography represents me and my passions perfectly. I believe adventure helps us figure out who we are and leads us to realize who we want to become. Being in strange places forces us to learn and grow and explore new ideas and immerse ourselves in other cultures. I started traveling alone in my early twenties, and it changed my life. Through my photography I want to inspire people to go outside their comfort zone, and explore the earth while protecting wild places.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Lacy, a professional photographer and writer based in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
My photography journey started in my teenage years, when I worked for my mom as her videographer and photographer assistant at weddings and events. I didn’t go to school or get a degree in photography, my skills are self taught and I learned through trial and error how to use different cameras and post process.
I’ve worked in many photography, writing and marketing positions over the years mainly in-house for businesses and at a digital agency.
In 2019 I started my own freelance photography business, because I felt that my creative talents weren’t appreciated by the companies and business owners I worked for previously.
Now I feel fulfilled in my career choices because I work for myself and only work with the people and businesses I choose to work with. I offer photography and videography services as well as writing and social media marketing.
My storytelling abilities set me apart from others in my industry, and my passion for adventure and exploring take me to places where many don’t venture.
I enjoy working with brands to create a visually appealing aesthetic that will capture the attention of their audience and provide copy that invites conversation.
My clients vary depending on the projects I’m working on. I shoot portraits for individuals, lifestyle and products for brands, and my personal favorite is adventure and wildlife photography. I’m most proud of my work in wild places documenting animals in their natural habitat. I believe this is one of the most pressing issues of our time— The mass extinction of wild animals due to habitat loss and climate change.
I sell prints of my personal work and i’m currently expanding into film work which is something I’m very excited about.
My goal for the future is to bring more stories to light that inspire others, and ignite conversations about love, life, nature, and how we’re all connected on this earth.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Hearing from people directly about how my personal work makes them feel. I never expected to get such positive feedback from individuals about how my images and videos provoke thoughts and feelings that bring them closer to nature and wildlife. Sometimes it brings me to tears because I feel so honored.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Networking with other creatives. I’ve met so many different people who do creative work and they’ve helped me with referrals, bringing me on on their projects, and giving me tips and tricks to improve my business. The creative communities i’m part of have helped me so much on my journey to becoming a full time photographer. I’ve made many great friends as well.
