We recently connected with LaCriscia Fowlkes and have shared our conversation below.
LaCriscia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
What did my parents do right? Wow! They did so many things right, and some things as an adult, I know they did the best they knew how to. I am number 4 out of 5 children. Number 5 is my twin, who is 13 minutes younger than me, collectively we are “the babies.” I think what they did right includes respecting God, caring for my elders, knowing when to be silent and when to speak, and ultimately love is the greatest gifts. That’s a lot!
Our father, Alvin Sr., passed in 2010, and our mom, Bernice, died in 2016. In my mom’s obituary, I wrote how their love for us translated into having a formal relationship with God. Reflecting now to answer this question, I realize that is what sustains me even now, There is a thin line between love and grief. Reflecting on my parents’ hugs and I love yous help me deal with my grief with strength.
Growing up, we were always in church, from bible studies to meetings, choir rehearsals, and even cleaning the church. Our involvement in our historic church taught me how to conduct meetings, plan events, write scripts, be an actress, prepare for productions, and hospitality. I learned that love and hate could exist in the same place at the same time and that you can still have a common goal in mind. This was a big part of my life; I loved every moment.
They made me own my mistakes and supported me when I felt wronged. Though most of the teacher’s reports ruled their opinion of my actions in school, they would still listen to me recount my version of the story. They made me feel loved even when we didn’t openly say it in the household. They made me feel safe. They made sure we had food on the table and clothes on our backs. They showed me how to care for the community and stand up for people. They showed me that it takes a village and the village of family and friends I have now is a reflection of the village I saw my parents had growing up.
Sometimes I think it was too good to be true, but it is all true. I hope I show up for my family and others the same way.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I created Rooted In Love and Truth (RLT) as a reminder of how I wanted to live my life, always guided by the principle of loving your neighbor as yourself and being truthful at all times. The evolution of RLT not only was my personal journey to healing but a company that can teach and trains others to live a life rooted in love and truth.
Our services have evolved from the expression of building websites and proposals that represent the client to making sure the client has a holistic healing practice through sound baths, breathwork, reiki, and herbal remedies. I still do the earlier consulting work through a branch of the business (Fowlkes Solutions), and the healing arts and holistic items come through RLT.
The pandemic shutdown was the best thing that has happened to me in a while. It brought all of the healing arts training to me, and in 2021 I went through my first year of classes to become an herbalist. I love what I do. Join me for Rejuvenation Mondays to see the practice in action = for FREE!
I must say that the love part of RLT also incorporates coupling services – officiating weddings, couple’s premarital sessions, and a coupling course that examines all aspects of commitment/marriage to develop a Love Roadmap.
All services focus on THE TRUTH – internal, external, perception, and reality. When applied correctly, the truth is freeing in all aspects of your life. So if you ask how did I get here and can’t find the answers, RLT has a course for individuals. The course focuses on self-esteem, confidence, decision-making, and healing.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Like many entrepreneurs, I started the business and have also had to have a full-time job. My full-time positions have afforded me the funds to pour into the basic structure of the business. Most businesses go through a phase of not turning a profit. I had that phase of juggling it all. It’s a pure faith walk at times. I have always had clients, and determining prices and payments were hard at first. I was scared to price my own knowledge, skills, and abilities. I had to research what it meant to have my skill set. With all the elements that feed my business now, I had to figure it out for each revenue stream.
Juggling time was a big obstacle. Dividing time between full-time and now this new company was a struggle.
At some point, I had to get a tight understanding of myself. When do I like to work behind the computer? When do I like to talk on the phone? What day of the week should I not have meetings?
Then one day, I woke up, and it all had come together. The work I was doing was sustaining my business. The revenue flow had somehow turned the business from being in the red to being in the black, and I was no longer using the revenue from my full-time to sustain my business. I was also sleeping more at night from 3-4 hours to now 5-6 at times. I’m working towards 8.
I kept pushing, and I think what I was supposed to be doing in life aligned with the energy of abundance.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
If I could go back in time, I would have paid closer attention to what I liked to do as a child. I loved walking through my Big Mamma’s flowerbeds, gardens, and the grove of fruit trees. I would have asked more questions and studied her more as she canned goods for the winter. I would have probably just gone to school to be a counselor, but I just loved so much stuff that I would have probably had a double major in undergrad. I would have found some of the healing practices earlier outside of yoga and knowing about chakras. I would have made it to where I am now at a younger age.
