We recently connected with Lacretia Mitchell and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lacretia, thanks for joining us today. Looking back at the decisions you made early in your career, particularly whether to join a firm or start your own, do you feel you made the right choice for that stage of your career?
Looking back over the 4 years of my real estate career, I don’t regret anything. I believe every decision and outcome led to me growing in this industry and allowed me the freedom to adjust where necessary, which in turn has allowed me to get better.
When I first came into real estate, my focus was finding a brokerage that would educate and train me on how to be the best real estate agent and now 4 years later I have birthed Ellum Realty Firm, my own real estate firm, in hopes to impart the importance of every client no matter who, and making sure their mindset is ready to embark on the journey to build generational wealth through real estate, which offers an unlikely client experience like no other here in the state of Oklahoma.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Lacretia Mitchell, I grew up on the southside of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma with eastside roots. I experienced a traumatic experience at the age of five and till this day it still haunts me. Nonetheless, I knew at an early age I was different. I knew that I was destined for more than I could dream. I was one of the popular kids in high school. Captain of the basketball, cheer, and volleyball teams. Senior class president and held many other titles, and most importantly loved serving others and still love serving.
Right after high school I was unsure of my next steps and was spinning down a dark hole. I ended up conceiving my oldest daughter and having her at 20 years old. She is what saved me. She is what allowed me to dream again. The moment I saw her I knew I had to pursue better so there would be no excuse for her. After years of pursuing degrees and working multiple jobs, I finally earned my M.Ed in Adult Education Training in May of 2011. My skill set and life experiences have opened up the door to so many opportunities.
Everyday I get the opportunity to educate, empower, and encourage individuals on how to build, maintain, and sustain generational wealth through real estate. I get the opportunity to guide individuals on turning what they thought was impossible to possible! I make sure my clients/every person I encounter feels valued and known. When it comes to my clients – I do my best to make sure they don’t just feel like another transaction. People come first at Ellum Realty Firm. My ability to anticipate and understand the needs of those who I encounter is a gift I am grateful for.
What sets me apart is my ability to use my past experiences for Good – to help others. What should have killed me only made me stronger and I strive to help others see that their pain has purpose and is necessary to form them into their best version.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Everyone has hacks to what has worked for them, but for me I focus on just showing up as my authentic self and not like anyone else. By me focusing on adding value to my target audience – it has allowed me to reach more people!
For me, it is about reaching more by adding value versus getting the following and likes.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Imagine living with the vivid images of being sexually abused by someone you thought loved you. Growing up with that image in your mind everyday. Imagine the weight of having to see this person every week. Imagine not feeling loved and protected. Imagine the insecurity that stirs within because you feel dirty and ashamed. Imagine trying to mask the pain with all the wrong things. That was me!
As a woman who has been, suffered with anxiety and depression, been rejected, and has fought with the vivid images from my past that haunt me everyday – I have always been determined to not allow my past dictate my future. I am determined to be the best version of myself I could possibly be, so my daughters and others can see what it means to overcome obstacles and WIN IN SPITE OF!
