Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lacie Heckathorne. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Lacie , thanks for joining us today. The first dollar you earn in a new endeavor is always special. We’d love to hear about how you got your first client that wasn’t a friend or family.
I started my business before social media was a thing so I had to figure out how to get creative with finding clients. After I decided to start my business the first thing I did was learn as much as I could about building a website. I bought a book about adobe dreamweaver and built my first basic website. There wasn’t much there, but it showed a few areas of projects I had done for myself and my family. The next step was advertising my business with my new website in a local community magazine. I got my first client call the day that magazine came out and I was so excited! I was still working a full time job then, but I took an early lunch because I couldn’t wait to call them back and set up our first meeting! To this day that project is still one of my favorites. It really sealed the deal for me on creating this business. I also loved working with that family so that was a huge plus to my first project! It always makes the project more fun when you get to work with such great people!
Lacie , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Lacie Grace Interiors focuses on residential and multi family projects. We offer full service interior design anywhere in the world you need to create a home or even a second home or vacation home. We also offer remodeling services, new construction help, color consultations, and custom furniture and decor to name a few. I started an interior design business because I love helping people create a home that truly reflects who they are and the lifestyle they want to live. I have the education and work experience to back up my design process and its been a huge pleasure over the years to build a business that is client centered and focused on helping people live their best life. The process and team that I have built creates a seamless and easy to understand process that makes creating your home as stress free and fun as possible!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Each project I take on is completely different from the next in terms of what the clients needs and expectations are. It took a while to learn how to manage that as I typically have several large projects going at the same time. Having a strong process in place to follow helps me be able to focus on each client and a design that is unique to them. That also means that each project has its own set of unique issues that arise and some projects have more than others. It can be quite easy to get sucked into dealing with those issues and there can be days where you feel like giving it all up and doing something else. The one thing that I learned and that I keep with me at all times is my Why. Why do I want this business? Why do I like doing interior design? Then I remind myself how my life would be drastically different if I went to work for someone else. Reminding myself of my why keeps me going on those hard days and gives me the push I need to get through it and keep smiling for my clients and assuring them that I have their back.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Marketing! That is the one piece of my business that has always been a struggle. I wish I would have outsourced that a lot sooner and found trustworthy people that I could hand that part of my business to.
