We recently connected with La’Chyia Petty and have shared our conversation below.
La’Chyia , appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
Honestly I wish I would have started earlier. Growing up I knew I was a good writer and I knew I loved being creative. I started out with writing short stories and poetry but after while it wasn’t as fulfilling for me. I feel like if was introduced to singing earlier I could’ve been more developed vocally. I’m in between whether w should have started earlier or now because if didn’t experience life the way I did I wouldn’t be able to write and express my self vocally on an emotional level.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Crazy thing I got into writing how I get into anything. That I can do it too mindset. I just ended up loving it honestly. It became my therapy. What set me apart from others is just my creative process. If it doesn’t feel good I won’t do it. Also when I listen to beats the music paints a picture and I put it into lyrics. I also feel like a have a gift to be able to write for others sound. I’ll study artist voice and write to their sound.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I think society could help a lot of artists become better by seeing the artist for who they are and stop trying to compare them to others. I honestly don’t feel like it’s a compliment. The goal isn’t to sound like another person!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Growing up I face a lot of challenges with poverty. We struggled so much coming up. Watching my mom help everyone and people never returned the favor. Constantly watching doors get closed in our face time after time. I was homeless 3 times before I got to 11th grade. I’ve never lived in a place for longer than a year. I had to grow up fast. I didn’t get to enjoy my childhood. I had responsibilities at a young age. Was always in survival mode. I just knew I wanted stability and only I could give it to myself. So I work hard to be in the position I am now but I know I could go further in life so I’m passionate about making a better life for myself and my love ones. Giving up has never been an option. I’ll put up a fight until my last breath. As long as I have air in my lungs I will keep going. Failure is a mindset!
