We recently connected with Lacey Melguizo and have shared our conversation below.
Lacey , appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project that I have ever worked on would be my work with Mindfulness in Schools. This work was a soul calling that incorporated creativity, heart, and mind and impacted health and well-being with students and teachers in ways that transcended my expectations. It was a gift to be able to be a part of planting the seeds of mindfulness within the public school system to benefit so many elementary school children and teachers.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a multi-faceted creative that is dedicated to helping heart-centered humans show up and be seen by infusing heart, mind, and soul into the photography experience. I fell in love with photography when I became a mom over 15 years ago and evolved into a creative business owner shortly after my second child was born, 12 years ago. I recently reimagined and rebranded my business to transcend the ordinary photography experience and empower heart-centered humans to show up and be seen! I love breathing life into the stories of the people and brands that I get to serve.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I have pivoted several times in my business. After building a successful and award-winning wedding photography business I had to make a decision; continue building my business and miss out on weekends with my children, or scale back and give it up to invest in being with them. I decided to invest in my children and that led us to home-schooling them which opened doors that I didn’t know existed before. I went back to school and became a mindfulness- based meditation teacher and created and piloted several mindfulness programs that were integrated into five different public elementary schools. Over six years, thousands of students, hundreds of teachers and parents weaved the mindfulness practices that they learned from programs I created into the fabric of their education. This empowered them with evidence-based practices that decrease stress, enhance learning, and well-being. This work was one of the greatest honors of my life and also one of the most difficult to pivot from. After Covid, things in the public school system shifted and I was not able to make my business profitable, so once again I found myself at a crossroads professionally. It was a bittersweet decision but I realized that my work in bringing mindfulness into the school system was complete. The work continues to live on and it was clear to me that the season had come for me to let go and watch the seeds grow in the hearts and minds of the amazing students and teachers who continue to practice. These pivots have taught me that there is so much wisdom in the present moment if we take the time to stop breathe and ask ourselves a courageous question, “What does this present moment want to give me?” There is joy to be found in stopping, listening, and connecting to the beauty of right now.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being a creative connects me to the love and joy of my Creator. When I am in the creative process I feel aligned and full of joy and possibility. I love co-creating with others and bringing forth an idea into form together. It is such a transformative process to engage in the creative process and allow it to move in and through us to bring about something that did not exist before the idea came into action. Building relationships through the creative process is something I am grateful for. It is rewarding because of the connections I get to make with other creatives that further inspires the flow of engaging in creativity together inspiring the lives of others.
