We recently connected with Labeaud Colbert and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Labeaud , thanks for joining us today. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your career and how did you resolve those issues?
I have been a writer since childhood. My first story was written in second grade, and it became apparent to the adults in my life that I had a gift for writing. I regularly wrote stories and poems, and in high school, one of my English teachers even published my first poem. Writing was my passion, and regardless of how little I studied, I consistently achieved A and B grades in English. Today I sometimes teach advanced high school English classes in my spare time. Additionally, I had a talent for art. I dedicated almost as much time to drawing and painting as I did to writing.
Because of my love for both writing and art, I always aspired to become a successful children’s book author. However, the illustration aspect presented a hurdle that took me my entire adult life to overcome. Instead, I started publishing short self-help books. By the time this article is released, I will have already published thirteen self-help books. Unfortunately, due to financial and experiential limitations, I wasn’t able to embark on my children’s book ventures until this year.
Labeaud , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
People recognize me as a businesswoman, model, actress, and public speaker, but what I hold in highest regard is my literary contributions. Even if you don’t take anything else from what I say today, I want you to understand the significance of prioritizing what truly matters for your legacy. Regrettably, I had neglected my writing career for several years, despite it being what I desired to be remembered for. It is a grave mistake for anyone to make.
Historically, my self-help books have been rooted in faith. However, today I have expanded my repertoire to include children’s books, comics, and secular books that delve into subjects of mental health, success and history.
I view my writing as a means to teach people, not solely for entertainment purposes. I believe that writing should guide readers on a journey toward self-improvement. In my children’s books, I incorporate messages about wisdom, confidence, and perseverance. Every piece I write serves a purpose of teaching and growth. The characters in my children’s books are inspired by real people, weaving historical figures and insights into adventurous tales. Unbeknownst to young readers, they are learning valuable lessons, and I believe that is the essence of mastery. I don’t want my readers to feel like they’re simply reading a dictionary; instead, I aim for the reading experience to evoke emotions and create a lasting impression.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I don’t want to glorify overworking but when I’m writing a book, it’s nothing for me to spend between ten and fourteen hours a day on it until it’s done. There’s a time for balance and there’s a time for excellence and excellence doesn’t come from balance.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I’d bet that the people who follow me are convinced that there’s some secret strategy behind my social media persona. There’s actually not one. All you’re seeing is me being me. I have found that my personality, for some reason I have yet to discover, is quite controversial. I regularly spark discussions which either lead to great personal discovery or an all out fight. I’m posting what’s on my mind and I believe people can relate to it in some way.
I am becoming somewhat of a ‘who’s who’ within my Louisiana Creole community; which I appreciate. I frequently share cultural and historical content around my culture. I share teasers to my books about Louisiana Creole people and it has garnered a little interest. Overall, I’m still extremely low on the influencer totem pole but I know that I’m making a difference in people’s lives with my posts, videos, books and podcast (Labeaud’s Life Lessons) because people tell me that often. My main objective is to contribute to society and leave a legacy that continues to be a blessing for people.
