Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Laavanya Hunt. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Laavanya, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
I’m incredibly fortunate to have grown up with loving and supportive parents in a household filled with love. But they never treated me like a friend until after college—they were strict and held me to high standards. They could be tough when my grades were low but always encouraging when I did well. This put a lot of pressure on me to work hard and constantly improve.
I wasn’t the strongest student, especially in subjects like math and science, but my parents invested in tutors and dragged me to extra classes until I got my grades up. They emphasized that, even if I didn’t pursue those fields as a career, it was crucial to excel and always give it my best effort. At the time, I resented it. I would argue with them, telling exaggerated stories about how the teachers were the worst—anything to avoid those classes. But my parents saw right through it and pushed me to stay committed to my studies.
Looking back, I’m glad they did. I was very lazy when I was in school and if they didn’t push me, I don’t think I would’ve out in as much effort into my dreams. Even though it caused tension at the time, their persistence instilled strong values and shaped my work ethic. That mindset of perseverance has stayed with me ever since.

Laavanya, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have experience as a producer/coordinator, however for my full-time job, I work as an assistant at a livestream media and music company. My goal is to start my own business, offering production services to aspiring directors and writers, helping them bring their visions to life and eventually develop and move on to bigger projects. I’m passionate about films that present unique perspectives and stories that either teach the audience something new or make them feel seen. I want to contribute to projects that inspire others and challenge their viewpoints. For me, film is about more than just entertainment; it’s about connection and impact.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I think the most important way to break into the industry is through networking. I wish I had researching and going to more networking events, film festivals, or alumni meetups to connect with people in the industry—whether they were at my level or a bit more experienced. Most of the jobs I’ve gotten have come from people I’ve met through work.
I’ve always been shy, which made me hesitant to put myself out there, especially when I didn’t have much experience. But I’ve realized that building connections is key, and I wish I had focused on that sooner.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I started in the industry in the Health & Safety Department, as a fresh graduate with limited work experience during a global pandemic with only a few shows in production, I was lucky enough to be staffed a few months after graduating. I knew I didn’t want to work in that department forever but eventually while networking as a COVID PA I was able to land an Office PA job and started working closely with the coordinators and producers on narrative TV which is exactly where I thought I wanted to be. Unfortunately once that show ended the Writers and Actors strikes began which put every production and a complete halt and all of my future job offers were gone, all my connections were also out of work and I felt like I was back at square one.
Fortunately about 7 months after my show had ended I started working for a production house in Simi Valley that focused more on music and comedy than narrative which developed my interest in live TV and I am enjoying learning more about it and will possibly stay in this path for quite sometime.
