We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kyrston Jones a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kyrston , thanks for joining us today. Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
Growing up I always saw my mother doing it all! From running multiple side businesses/ hustles, working her main job, couponing to save money, being everyone’s go to person for advice, and more. She always made it happen and had determination and drive to do more.
This had a huge impact on me and my journey. She let me know that I could do anything I put my mind to by both telling me and showing me.
Kyrston , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Kyrston Jones. I am married with 2 children. I work in healthcare during the day and make candles at night.
I started my business in 2018. Originally starting out as just making candles. Since then I have expanded to different types of home fragrance products to include candles, home scents (room & car sprays), wax melts, reed diffusers, and car diffusers.
Everything I make and sell is handmade in small batches by me. Our goal is to offer home products that smell good, while creating a cozy ambiance and bringing peace, comfort, and relaxation to your space.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for me is those that I meet at Pop Up Shops and vending events. This is where I can meet new potential customers, have them smell my products and provide them with first hand information about my business.
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
One of my favorite marketing and sales stories just recently occurred. Myself and my business party took a risk and hosted our our Pop Up Shop. It was a great success, we all met a lot of new potential clients/customers.
This was a huge risk. The odds were stacked up against. Pop Up Shops can be very hit or miss for small businesses. But we did it and was successful at doing so. We literally researched different locations, created an event on Eventbrite, created an Ad on Instagram and Facebook, created a flyer, went out around the neighborhood to give them out in the surrounding neighborhoods.
We had a great turnout, great vendors, great customers, and good vibes.
