We recently connected with Kyron Walker and have shared our conversation below.
Kyron, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
As a pop singer, who sings various other genres, in a city that is predominantly hip hop and rnb based it seemed like no one really understood what I was doing. No really understood/understands my sounds. I think that happens when people are afraid of what they don’t know. A lot of people don’t really get it when it’s 5’10” 267lb black gay man in platform shoes singing bubbly music. But it’s not my job to make people understand it’s my job to make music that makes you feel good and I believe i accomplish that everytime i go into the studio. F.A.M.E. coming soooooon daaaahling.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I am a singer/songwriter/entertainer of the WORLD! No, really, I’m a singer/songwriter based in Orlando, Florida. You may have seen me around with glitter platform shoes. I’ve been singing since I was young and performing since i was in high school.
The thing that sets me apart from everyone and everything is that I’m in my own lane. I can honestly say that there is no one who is quite like me and is capable of doing what I do. While most people here are rappers or rnb stars I’m like the only black pop singer in Orlando it seems like and it is kinda cool because I’m not being compared to anyone or having to compete. The downside to that is no one is booking me because I’m a pop singer and sometimes it feels like I’m missing out. ANNOUNCEMENT TO SHOW PROMOTERS: I do sing other genres! I can give you a lil Chaka or Anita or maybe some Toni if you’d like . I’m serious and joking at the same time.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The goal is to achieve longevity. I am going to be the biggest star in the world and that’s what drives me every morning when i wake up. I give grace to god for blessing me and then I say how I’m going to dominate the world with my music. It’s my passion that fuels me.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Create spaces for everyone. I mean everyone. As well as supporting actual talent. People who take their craft seriously sometimes get the short end of the stick. I also want to vote on getting rid of the system of the artist paying to perform. Like what is that? You ask me to perform and then you want me to pay you to give me a stack of tickets to attempt to sell and make my money back? No ma’am. It’s time to dead that.
