We recently connected with Kyree Thames and have shared our conversation below.
Kyree, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Being successful can mean many things but to me, I feel like you become successful when you achieve peace during your own journey. You’ll deal with challenges, hardships and lessons but that is what makes you and learning how to overcome those obstacles creates that healthy version of you. There is also principles that leads you into living through life as comfortable as possible. I used to live with this mindset of feeling worried if I didn’t make it NOW and try to0 hard to get what I want but prioritizing the wrong things. That doesn’t mean I turned into this perfect person at the end, that’ll never happen, but I wanted to reach that perfect version of myself as soon as possible where I was focused on the finish line and not the steps to get to that point. You always have to remember too, once you reach that finish line, there’s another race around the corner waiting for you. So, it doesn’t matter what your bank account looks like, or what car you have, are you happy and did you find peace?
that is my definition of being successful.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello! My name is Kyree Alexander Thames, and I’m the founder of Kyree Films. I’m a 24 year old freelance videographer and editor here in Portland, OR. I was born in Los Angeles, California, and I’ve always had this deep passion for capturing moments of life while growing up in it. It was this love for storytelling that naturally led me into the videography and photography industry.
I got my start in this field by attending programs in my high school to learn about the digital media world which then led me into getting my associates at Mt.Hood community college. As I was still trying to figure out how to shoot videos and going through many trials and errors, I honed my craft overtime learning how to create visuals to make those shots more impactful in any situation. It can even be something simple, but how you film will change the way it is looked at from all angles. Today, I specialize in creating high-quality videos and photos that preserve memories, whether it’s for personal events like weddings or special occasions, or for businesses looking to make an impact with their brand visuals.
What sets me apart is my unique perspective as someone who understands the importance of storytelling but also capturing shots while not being seen to really get those scenes to look authentic as possible. The products and services I provide too are tailored to each individual or brand’s needs, ensuring their vision is captured in the most meaningful way possible.
I’m most proud of the connections I’ve made with clients and the memories we’ve created together. Knowing that my work has helped people relive some of the most important moments of their lives is incredibly fulfilling. It reminds me about how important just one click of a button can do. It can even be something to just look back on which reminds me of my parents when they use to record everything while living in the moment. Now we look back at those every year.
For anyone considering working with me, I want them to know that I’m deeply committed to creating work that stands out, that feels real, and that truly represents the people and brands I work with. I pride myself on building relationships with clients, listening to their needs, and ensuring that their vision is realized in the final product. If you’re looking for someone who genuinely cares about bringing your story to life, I’d love to work with you!

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to help as many people as I can whether it’s filming for things that are super impactful or helping others learn. I can see myself owning a studio in the future offering great internships to the younger generation.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I remember when I kept comparing myself to other videographers a lot back then when I first got into doing this. It was very unhealthy because it would set me back thinking “Am I good enough” and things like that when at the end of the day, it’s not really a competition out here, it is really collaborative. Once I made that shift to really focus on improving my skills and do what I can with the equipment I had, I made it work and had a blast on the people I’ve met. Changing my perspective comparing myself really helped me learn that it is okay to make mistakes and we’re not on the same timeline. We will reach what we want in the end goal someday, just focus on the in-between of the start and finish.
