Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kyra Anderson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kyra, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
The process of landing my first job in my field was quite lengthy. For a long time, I struggled to figure out what I truly wanted to do in life and my purpose here on Earth. I knew I wanted to help people medically, but I always fell short. During and after graduating college, I explored many different directions. At first, I wanted to be a nurse, but that desire was short-lived. I realized I didn’t want to be in a hospital, repeating the same rounds every day. Then, I thought, “Physical therapist! Yes, that’s it.” Until I realized I didn’t want to be stuck in a medical office helping patients.
Still, that never meant I didn’t enjoy helping people. I knew I was close to finding my path—but not quite there. Eventually, I discovered my love for fitness, health, and wellness. I shifted my mindset toward wanting to give people what I never truly received growing up: support, guidance, and genuine care from (some) coaches. I wanted to become the coach I always wished for, which led me to pursue a career as a fitness instructor.
My first job in the field was at a well-known establishment—Equinox. Before starting, I was presented with the image of a luxurious gym that cared for both clients and trainers. Motivated by this vision, I decided to go for it—I applied and even moved to a whole new state. But once I started working there, my dreams were quickly crushed. The reality was nothing like I had imagined. I thought we would be supported, valued, and paid our worth—but none of that was true. It turned into a nightmare rather than the dream I had hoped for.
Despite the disappointment, I fought to stay as long as I could before finally realizing, This isn’t going to work—at all. Though I left filled with frustration, I never gave up on my field. I remained eager to further my education and continue learning about the fitness industry. Looking back, despite everything, I’m still grateful for where my first job led me.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Reflecting on my first job and my decision to never give up, I believe this journey has showcased my resilience the most. Transitioning from working under a company that prioritized profit over people to carving my own path and figuring out how to build a business independently has been an ongoing process.
Throughout this journey, I’ve faced many challenges—navigating what I can and can’t do while dealing with personal setbacks. Falling out with individuals and walking a path that often felt lonely was tough, especially while trying to figure out how to make everything work.
As I continue on my journey of growth and healing, I realized I needed to start somewhere healthier—somewhere that aligned with my values. That realization led me to join a studio as a group fitness instructor. Since then, I’ve been growing, learning, and discovering more about myself and my faith in God. This experience has truly been life-changing.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was the belief that I could do everything on my own and never needed instruction from anyone again. This mindset stemmed from the traumatic experience I faced at the beginning of my journey. Once I let go of that belief and surrendered, I realized it was holding me back more than anything else. It took about a year to recognize this, but once I did, my life turned around for the better.
I no longer see anything as a failure—only as a lesson—and this was one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned.
