Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kyonne Smith. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kyonne, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Looking back, what’s an important lesson you learned at a prior job?
I’ve worked in various hospitality and customer service roles, but two companies stand out for their strong branding, storytelling, and social media strategies. A high-end personal training gym is where I first learned the importance of personal branding and storytelling through social media. Their logo was everywhere—on equipment, merchandise, and almost all surfaces—and clients eagerly bought into the brand, even paying premium prices for simple items like t-shirts. Showcasing fit, successful, and attractive individuals on their social media feeds, gave viewers an aspirational glimpse of what they could achieve by training with them. It wasn’t necessarily selling the workouts, but the lifestyle of someone who works out at that gym.
Similarly, at a restaurant, branding and social media played a key role. However, the owner’s approach was much more personal, sharing cooking tutorials, behind-the-scenes produce sourcing, and stories behind each dish. This connection made customers choose the restaurant not just for its food but for the story behind it. These experiences taught me that people don’t just buy products or services, but what a brand signifies.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi everyone! My name is Kyonne (pronounced key-ahn) Smith, and I’m the creator of Love, Daisy, a candle brand with curated playlists that I started during the peak of the 2020 lockdown. Love, Daisy’s mission is to make self-care a full sensory experience through amazing scents, great music, and creative, artistic labels.
The idea for Love, Daisy came about when I was trying to make my apartment feel like home during the pandemic. At the time, I lived in a small room in a four-bedroom apartment, spending most of my time there since the living room wasn’t used much. To make my space feel cozier, I experimented with candles, wall art, and home decor, but nothing transformed the atmosphere like lighting a candle. While I found candles that smelled nice, they were often generic and lacked personality. I wanted candles that felt like me—playful, quirky, and a little cheeky.
That’s when I discovered candle-making videos on YouTube. I binge-watched tutorials, read numerous articles, crunched the numbers, and decided to give it a shot. It has been such a fulfilling experience seeing how customers resonate with the labels and react to the scents in real time. Although my first attempt at running Love, Daisy lasted only six months, I relaunched in August of this year with a solid foundation. Now, I’m more excited than ever about the future of the business. I can’t wait to expand, create new scents that capture everyone’s favorite moments, and even explore collaborations with local businesses in the new year.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
Yes! I personally make each candle, design, print, and apply every label—it’s truly a labor of love. I’ve done extensive research, watching countless YouTube videos and reading endless articles, as candle-making involves a lot of testing and can be costly. Factors like jar diameter, wax type, and fragrance viscosity all affect the wick being used, making it as much a science as an art. Even with having a solid formula for each scent, I still test a candle from each batch to ensure quality. This product is coming from my hands and the Capricorn in me won’t settle for anything less than perfect!
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
In-person markets! With a product like candles, it’s great to get in front of people and have them smell, touch, and experience the candles in real life. However, finding great markets takes a lot of experimenting.
