We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kyonna Floyd. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kyonna below.
Kyonna, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I’ve harbored a deep passion for the arts from a young age! Initially, I viewed it as a pastime for enjoying with friends and expressing oneself. However, my perspective shifted around the age of 14 when I became heavily involved in my church’s drama ministry. Following one of our youth conferences, a tearful woman approached me, revealing that she had pleaded with God for a sign before attending church, or else she would lose hope entirely. Her sign manifested as pure laughter, bringing her an unparalleled sense of joy after months of despair. This experience taught me that the arts are not merely recreational but also a form of ministry.
Kyonna, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Since I was a child, I’ve been deeply immersed in the world of the arts. Creative expression has been my driving passion. What captivates me most about art is its ability to manifest in diverse forms. My journey has taken me from dance to music, theater to visual arts, and each has brought me fulfillment. Currently, I’m channeling my creativity into storytelling through writing. I’m in the process of compiling a collection of poems for a future book. Additionally, I’m delving into the world of filmmaking, exploring the joy of narrative through this medium.
My life’s purpose is to heal my community through the power of art. I use storytelling across various artistic mediums as my strategy. I’m deeply passionate about sharing the stories that many are too afraid to voice, particularly the unspoken emotions of black women behind closed doors. While we’re often portrayed as strong, fierce, and bold, there’s a depth of vulnerability that remains unseen. I’m committed to exploring and depicting that vulnerability authentically. In this journey, I’m not only facilitating healing within others but also finding my own path to healing, with the hope that it will resonate through my work.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The driving force behind my life has always been God’s purpose and the empowerment of Black women. Without His guidance, my efforts would be meaningless. Countless times, even when undeserving, God has intervened in my life, and I cannot ignore His presence and influence. Black women are frequently undervalued yet expected to shoulder immense burdens. I aim to challenge this narrative by showcasing our strength alongside our sensitivity, our yearning for vulnerability and intimacy, and our inherent delicacy. Through my art and creativity, I am dedicated to illuminating these truths to the world.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most fulfilling aspect of art is its ability to make a meaningful impact on others. Teaching musical theatre and dance to children part-time has been an incredibly rewarding experience for me. I am continually amazed by the astronomical ideas my students bring to me, whether it’s writing their own plays or organizing elaborate flash mobs for the school. Their boundless creativity knows no limits, and I am honored to witness their journey and offer guidance along the way. If I can positively influence just one person’s life each day, I believe my work is truly worthwhile.
