We were lucky to catch up with Kyoko Getz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kyoko, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
I was born and raised in Japan, where my parents instilled in me the concept of “Ichigo-Ichie” .This Japanese proverb can be translated as “once, a meeting” or “in this moment, an opportunity”. It teaches that each encounter and experience is a unique treasure that will never be repeated in the same way. My parents always emphasized the importance of treasuring and cherishing the moment and treating everyone with kindness and respect, as each meeting is meant to be. This philosophy taught me to live life to the fullest, without regrets, and helped me establish great connections with people I have met. I am so grateful for my parents who have given me so much love and support, and taught me important lessons. Because of them, I am who I am today.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a co-founder of OLURA skincare and a director of education at Shikobeauty. I m known for my expertise as a knowledgeable esthetician, educator, and product developer, as well as for my contributions to the skincare industry.
My experience helping clients identify and solve their skincare problems has led to opportunities helping launch a number of popular skincare brands. I was a founding member of Kate Somerville Skincare and went on to serve as the brands product development director. I also served as a brand ambassador for TATCHA skincare. Where I helped define the protocols used in their facials. My years spent caring for clients’ skin, developing new product formulas, and helping launch new brands, have all brought a tremendous amount of joy to my life. Since I co-founded OLURA and joining Shikobeauty team, I have committed myself to producing even more precious moments and smiles, and to help each of our client’s feel confident in their beautiful skin!

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Since I helped open the Kate Somerville clinic, my passion has been helping clients gain confidence and self-esteem by taking care of their skin. At one point, I had a one-year waiting list. One day, I couldn’t stand or sit because my back disc had ruptured, and I needed surgery.
The first thing I thought about was my clients. How could I tell them I had to cancel their appointments and that I wasn’t sure when I could return? I knew a long recovery was ahead, and I was devastated. I also knew it would be very difficult for me physically to work as I used to. At that time, our company was expanding the product side of the business, and Katie Suggested I take over the product development department. I have a college degree, but it has nothing to do with biochemistry or science, and I had zero experience in developing products.
Being in charge of a popular brand’s upcoming product development felt like too much responsibility and too big a job for me, but I knew which ingredients and products would work for my clients’ skin, and I thought that should be one of the most important aspects when developing products. Plus, how great would it be to help create amazing products that can make so many people happy? I could always learn the science and biochemistry part.
I regained my confidence and passion. I had amazing mentors who were well-known chemists and took classes in science and chemistry to educate myself. The journey wasn’t easy, but we were able to launch award-winning products when I took over product development.
Ever since then, I’ve had more opportunities as an educator and product developer.
Of course, I still perform facial treatments once in a while, and love everything about it. However, I am grateful for the circumstances that have allowed me to gain many experiences and knowledge, and for the people who have supported me along my career journey. I truly believe everything happens for reasons.

If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
If I could go back, I would choose the same profession, Definitely! Despite the challenges, the opportunity to help clients gain confidence through skincare and to innovate in product development has been incredibly fulfilling. The support from mentors and the satisfaction of seeing positive results make it all worthwhile! Hopefully, I could meet the same people. The mentors, colleagues, and clients who have supported and inspired me have played a crucial role in my journey. Their guidance and encouragement have been invaluable, and I wouldn’t want to miss the opportunity to connect with them again.
