We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kyng Curry. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kyng below.
Kyng, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Power of Blackness was created from a void I felt was missing in my community. A clothing brand that represented us in a positive light. Yet also inspiring and empowering us to be our best selves. Doing this through fashion I felt was a no brainer. I offer saw beauty in darker complexion being portrayed as sexy only if the women were oiled up and in a small bikini. I didn like that & hated seeing how black women were being use only for sex appeal and nothing else. As if they had nothing more to offer. So I along with a long time college friend of mines who is from Tanzania, also growing up in Saudi. She spoke and wrote in Arabic. Expressing to her these same concerns as I mentioned above telling me her my feelings my vision she was able to help me cultivate this amazing logo and style that is a representation of us around the world.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I go by the name of Kyng Curry, I am a young African American entrepreneur who has always had that spirit in me looking back on my childhood but never thought I’d be here. With my own brand and leading and inspiring my peers like I do today. I’ve always been into fashion and grew up taking photos and messing around with photo shop for MySpace profile pictures. So these things I felt I was destined for. So being a street portrait photographer & having my own brand providing clothes for urban wear is the overall experience of who I am.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One of thing lesson I learned was never order too much of one product. I believe at first that I should buy 50 of this one thing. But after not selling half of that product I’m not stuck with it. So moving forward I produce less of a product to create a higher demand for it and also doing this method with all my products.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I don’t have one story in particular but I can reassure you that in this business and as an entrepreneur every single day you have to show & have resilience. This isn’t for the work nor the lazy. This there is no safety net of a 9-5 to lean on & knowing that every Friday or every two Fridays there a check coming because that’s not the case. You get out what you put into this art form. It’s that simple
