We were lucky to catch up with Kyndel Shalae recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kyndel , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
I am blessed to have the most amazing and supportive parents in the world. Ever since I was young they have poured into my creativity and made sure they were a prime example of having a strong work ethic. Neither of them have an artistic bone in their body (I say that with truth and love) but they never limited me from pursuing the arts. They would get the latest art sets and sewing machines, so that I was able to practice my skills at a young age. My parents have worked in the banking field for many years to ensure they were able to properly provide for my siblings and I. However, they never expected me to follow in their footsteps but wanted to make sure I took college serious in my field of study. That being said they helped me financially obtain my first degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising, which was the start of my career in the arts. From there they continued supporting me by attending every fashion show I ever did in my college days and following years to come. When I decided change career field into social work, while pursuing fine arts as my side business they supported that decision. Now instead of a fashion show the attend my art shows and assist me with any events that I put on. I feel very honored to have encouragement they give me on a daily basis.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a seasoned Phoenix-based artist, that has dedicated 15 years to refining my craft across diverse visual art forms. Initially armed with a degree in fashion design, I contributed to Arizona’s dance community before redirecting focus to my profound love for painting. My passion deepened while working with at-risk youth, igniting a commitment to artistic expression. I seamlessly merged painting and wood burning techniques to bring about an imaginative visions to life. While my creative spectrum is expansive, a significant portion of my portfolio draws inspiration from the richness of black culture. Notably, I have contributed to impactful projects, including the creation of Black History Matters murals in the Phoenix area. Art for me is a lifestyle that allows for me to self- reflect and grow into the individual that I am meant to be. I have been able to create pieces for others to see but now I want to help other create their own pieces that they can be proud of by hosting paint parties. This will bring a fun, unique and therapeutic component for my clients to experience.
I aspires to inspire and evoke emotions, leaving an indelible mark on those who engage with my art and/or services I provide.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The particular goal that I am hoping to reach in the coming years is to open an art studio for everyone to attend, especially those in the underserved communities. Many of those individuals have not had the opportunity to be exposed all the wonderful art forms out there or the resources. I want to be able to provide jobs to those in the art community that want to share their love on various artistic styles. Ultimately I would love to have both a traveling and stationary studio to provide services on a lager scale within the valley and surrounding areas.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being an artist is having one of my pieces evoke an emotion in someone, especially after putting so much time and love into a piece that I want to speak for me when I do not have the words. Another rewarding aspect is watching the individuals I do art with having fun creating pieces they can be proud of.
