We were lucky to catch up with Kymiah Isby recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kymiah , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
My first fashion show ever was the LA Fashion Week in March of 2023. I recognize this as the start of my modeling career. I applied for The Model Experience in December of 2022. I saw an advertisement encouraging models to apply, and although I had no knowledge of modeling, I felt led to make the first step and to apply. I was accepted soon after which meant that I needed to work on myself and my walk. Of course the big day came and I had so much nervousness and also excitement. When I entered, I met so many great people and creatives. It felt like home. Everything felt right, like this was the correct place to be. If I could go back, I definitely would have started even sooner but I’m glad that I started when I did because I don’t think that my journey would have been the same. I feel like if i started sooner, I would have been way more seasoned and successful but I am still working and I know that it will mean a lot more to me with the journey I am on.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Kymiah Isby. I go by Kym Kym. I am an editorial and runway model. What sets me apart from others are my values. I value God first. I do everything with intention and move in love. I am most proud of myself for how far I have come from the circumstances of my childhood and being raised in Memphis. I want people to know that they can overcome anything they put their mind to and that this may be the first they will hear of me but it sure won’t be the last because I have so much more to offer than fashion, beauty, and art.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative and model is being able to express yourself through the art that you create. The way I am able to express myself is through connection with a photographer who also sees the vision and the beauty of it. Being able to bring a vision into reality or turning a thought into an experience is such a beautiful thing.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Society can best support a thriving creative ecosystem in so many ways such as appreciation. Whether it be a compliment, a hug, a like on social media or even letting someone know the impact they had on your life can push a creative to keep going. Our world needs love and you never know what people are going through. Financially, you can pay people. I’ve noticed that in the modeling industry specifically, some models accept less than what they deserve and it may be like that in other creative spaces but I think that if you truly appreciate someone, a great way to show it is to pay them for their time. One last one is to actually show up, when their are events, SHOW UP! When you really appreciate and support the creative community, it has its ways of pouring back into you.
