We recently connected with Kym Williams and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kym thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I’ve always been a creative. I had a photography business in the past and I’m a writer at heart but I grew up hearing that I could never make a living with art and was always pushed to get a corporate job. I never fully allowed myself to pursue creativity as a living because I didn’t believe it could be done. I wish I had believed something different and pursued art a long time ago. I’m happier and more fulfilled and I would’ve avoided a lot of heartache and depression. It’s been two years since I quit my full-time job to pursue jewelry making and it’s been the best decision for my mental health, my energy levels and my overall joy,
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi, I’m Kym! I mostly am known for making quality handmade earrings but I also make gold-plated rings that were added to my product line-up this year. My earrings are always inspired by what I’m into at the moment, usually the inspiration is an organic bohemian or afrohemian flow but lately I’ve been really into color and pop art. It’s constantly changing.
This year I invested in a 3D printer and have been designing my own cutters which is really helpful in making unique shapes that can’t be found elsewhere. I also started creating files to make acrylic earrings and I’m learning how to make my own silk screens as well. The more tools I make myself the more opportunity there is for one-of-a-kind designs.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think most non-creatives don’t understand that creativity is not always there to tap into. I have moments where nothing is coming to mind and my non-creative friends think creativity is a thought rather than a place and that I just need to get focused more. I wish! lol Creativity comes from within. It’s something that comes from an inner place, not a thought process. It’s not always. logical and it can pop up from inspiration but also out of nowhere.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Most artists can’t afford to pay large sums of money for advertising. We rely on word of mouth so sharing our work when you see something you like or if someone asks where’d you get something you have on that’s handmade is huge for artists. It’s all about exposure. The more people that know we exist, the more we thrive.
