We were lucky to catch up with Kym Terribile recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kym, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
The biggest risk that I have ever taken is investing in myself and business. I knew for years that I wanted to work for myself and start a business.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi, I’m Kym, the founder and maker behind Wax Crescent. Wax Crescent is a candle company based on the idea of intention, sustainability and self-care.
I am a self-taught candle maker. I started making candles in 2019 when I found out how toxic candles could be. I set out to create a product that embodied everything that I believed in–clean ingredients, sustainability and the idea of intention. All Wax Crescent candles are hand-poured in small batches using non-toxic fragrance oils infused with natural essential oils
I spent years learning the delicate science of candle making and perfecting my scent blends.
For me, Wax Crescent is more than just candles, my company is focused on the idea of intentional, slow living and developing a connection to oneself.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of meeting new customers for me has been at markets. I try and do as many markets as I can throughout the year. It is a great way to connect with customers, test new products and build relationships. I am finding that candles are a product that people want to smell before they purchase, so having a presence in person has been vital for my business.
Most of the orders that I receive from my website are returning customers or people who have been referred by their friends to my products.
On a personal level I absolutely love being at markets. It is really special to meet my customers, and to see the joy that the scent of a candle brings to them. I especially love when one of my candles sparks a memory in someone and transports them back to another time.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
For me, candle making stared as a hobby, turned side hustle and then went to my full time job. I started making candles in 2016 just for myself after I learned how toxic so many candles could be–I would get terrible migraines whenever I burned a candle from a big box store. I spent years sourcing clean ingredients, creating different scent blends, perfecting my recipes and learning the science of candle making.
I started selling my candles in 2019 and worked it as my side hustle until July of 2021 when I went full time with my business. I did not leave my full time job until I reached the point where I was forced to choose between growing my business or keeping it as small as it was.
Taking that leap was so scary but really forced me to hustle and up level in so many ways.
