We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kym Baker. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kym below.
Kym, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
This is going to age me, Years before I started my business I was blessed to have boy/girl twins. When coming up with their names I wanted my daughter to have the nickname “CC” after the character CC Bloom in Beaches played by Bette Midler. When is came time to brainstorm a name for my business I wanted to keep it simple and have a message beyond the word. BLOOM just kept coming back to me, part of it I know had to do with the connect from me coming up with my daughters name but also the meaning behind the word BLOOM. “the state or period of greatest beauty, freshness, or vigor.” As business had grown. I have been able to incorporate the word with my different levels of service. Budding, Bloom, Blossom, and Beyond Bloom are the titles of service range from Level 1 to Level 4. It have been whimsical way to infuse Bloom throughout my business in marketing since something is always “Blooming”

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been in the beauty industry over 3 decades Starting my first career as a photographer in beauty and fashion. “I sometimes tell my client’s I used to retouch images of my clients when doing photography and now in my spa I am hands on retouching them.
I married a successful medical Dermatologist in downtown San Francisco where I oversaw the practice and did hands on training to help out with patients wherever needed. That was where I truly got the passion for skin.
I have now been a licensed Esthetician for 11 years and Bloom Spa has been thriving for try last almost 7 years.
I believe the gift I bring to my spa and clients is Healing. That comes in a lot of different forms. If you look at my menu of services you see a wide range from Facial, Laser Acne Treatments, Body Contouring and eye lash extensions and many more. I love so many things about this industry but my number one thing is to serve my clients with the most care a love I can give them to achieve their personal goals

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
As I mentioned prior my husband was a Dermatologist. He unfortunately was diagnosed with two very rare diseases. He initially loss use of his arms. I stepped in to do what I could at the practice, injections, liquid nitrogen, chart notes, biopsies. Unfortunately his diseased progressed and ended becoming a full quadriplegic. We were also bless with boy/girl twins during this challenging time. I had to step away from the practice to take care of new born twin and be a full time care taker to my husband. “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” so they say!!! Unfortunately my husband passed away and we relocated from California to Colorado to start our next chapter.
Let’s talk M&A – we’d love to hear your about your experience with buying businesses
As these last years have been a bit of unstable times being a small business owner I have done a bit of pivoting. We set up my personal branded skincare products Bloom Skin and created an online store to send people to help automate so we could streamline people skincare needs.
We also bought a company called Moor than Mud and rebranded in into the Bloom Skin product line. We are the exclusive distributor on Moor Mud and Dead Sea Mud for North America. We have a large business of acupuncturists, chiropractors, naturopaths, using our muds for their personal patients and clients.
The previous owner of Moor than Mud has transitioned to work with us in a consulting title to help transition the clients and work together we attend esthetic schools and teach spa owns and students the protocol on using the Dead Sea muds in their practice and all the benefits it has.
