We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kylie Vennefron. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kylie below.
Kylie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I think publishing a book in and of itself is a risk. You never know how readers are going to react to something that you’ve poured your heart and soul into. But you write books for yourself and publish them for the readers. Finishing a book is a huge accomplishment, and you can decide to either take the risk of publishing it and earning inevitable negative feedback, or you can keep it for yourself. I have no regrets about writing and publishing, and each release is a risk that I am happy to dive into.
Kylie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a fantasy author who first published back in 2022 and republished my debut novel in 2023. I currently write as a hobby and a sort of side hustle, whilst also being the assistant director at Azala Press. I have always loved to write, and create stories and worlds inside my head, and finally deciding to take the plunge back in 2021 was both terrifying and exciting. Fast forwarding to today with several books under my belt, and a hand in a small publishing house is honestly a dream come true. I love getting to help other authors make their dreams come true and avoid pitfalls that I myself experienced the first time around.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
There are SO many amazing and FREE resources available to those who wish to publish books. There are even a handful of resources that don’t cost very much and are great alternatives to the more expensive platforms. I wish I knew and had all of the knowledge I have now, and it’s crazy to look back and think about how blind I went into publishing my first book and not truly understanding the journey. Never be ashamed to use something simple and free when it comes to writing and publishing your book. There are a handful of people in the industry who look to shame you for this, but it’s not about them. It’s about what works best for YOU.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I published my first novel back in 2022, and I got numerous reviews on it that gave critical feedback about the plot, the story, and the editing. It was my debut novel and it was discouraging to see people not enjoying something that I wrote, and then I went back and realized why. I wasn’t proud of the story I’d written, because I had rushed it. I hadn’t taken the time to give these characters the voices they deserved. So I decided to pull it from the market less than a year after it’s release, and edit it again. It was a hard decision, but honestly, I feel like it was so worthwhile. I have grown so much in such a short amount of time.
