We recently connected with Kylie Truman and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kylie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
When I graduated college, I was certain about one thing: I wanted to work in Advertising and Marketing. My passion for photography, videography, writing and trend research all seemed to naturally point in that direction. I pursued my Master’s degree and followed the traditional path, landing a full-time position at a global, billion-dollar corporation.
At first, this felt like the dream come true. However, I quickly realized that working in corporate America was not what I had envisioned. For this particular role, creativity was often limited and I was encouraged to stick to the playbook, not question the process. For someone who thrives on innovation, this felt stifling. Despite positive feedback and recognition for my work, I knew I had hit a ceiling.
So I did something that, on paper, didn’t make much sense: I quit my stable 9-to-5 job and launched my own marketing agency. I was walking away from a reliable source of income to enter a saturated, competitive industry with no guarantees. But I believed in my vision: to create an agency offering consulting, content creation, photo/video production and social media management, all grounded in authenticity and creativity. I now get to work directly with clients who value fresh ideas and are excited to grow alongside someone who truly takes the time to understand their brand. That risk gave me not just a career, but a purpose.
Kylie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m the founder of TruCreative, a digital marketing agency built on years of hands-on experience in content creation, social media strategy and brand consulting. My career has taken me from working with local startups to collaborating with international companies, allowing me to understand how to craft marketing that genuinely connects with audiences across industries like food & beverage, tech, wellness, fitness, construction, beauty and more.
From outbound email marketing and cross-country field campaigns to quick-turn photo and video shoots for small businesses, I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty in every form of marketing. I bring both vision and versatility to every project, blending strategy with creativity to deliver content that feels authentic and drives real results.
Working in primarily social media has shown me that it’s constantly evolving. Businesses need someone who is up to date on the latest trends and understand the best practices from a PR standpoint and data-driven. My simple mission is to help brands show up in a way that leaves a lasting impression.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Finding your first client is never easy. For me, it all came down to networking and personal connection. When people meet you in person, know someone who trusts you or recognize you as part of their community, it naturally builds credibility. I started by promoting myself within my personal network, which led to friends reaching out for help with their content. From there, I focused on local businesses that I already supported and had a connection with, which made those conversations more authentic.
I also joined Facebook groups geared toward small business owners, where I could share my services, offer promotions and connect with fellow entrepreneurs in my area. Whether it’s through face-to-face interactions or mutual connections, familiarity breeds trust. In the early stages, being approachable and involved in your community makes a huge difference.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is seeing my ideas come to life, not just in my own work, but when others are inspired by them too! Whether it’s a trend I helped spark or a piece of content that someone decides to build on, it’s incredibly validating. I see this both in my personal and professional life, it gives me a confidence boost.
As a creative, especially when pitching out-of-the-box ideas, you hear a lot of “no’s” which that can be discouraging. But when something clicks, it’s a reminder that the risk and persistence are worth it. That moment of recognition makes all the hard work feel like it’s truly paying off.
