We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kylie Sligar a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kylie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
I have always known that I wanted to one day own my own therapy practice. One of my closest friends and I have shared this dream since we were in high school together. There is a lot of steps before starting your own business. We spent months planning, researching, and dreaming what this would look like. Building a business takes a strong plan, but also a lot of flexibility as your business will change (and hopefully grow) over time. Luckily, we have had good success with how we started our business, and I don’t think I would change anything about how we started. If anything, maybe I would start marketing efforts just a little bit earlier. My advice to anyone starting their own business would be to sit down (with your partner(s) if you have them) and start with writing down your values. I think it is important to not lose sight of why you started in the first place, what a values-driven business looks like for you, and how that translate over into the business side of things.
Kylie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
All In Bloom Therapy is trauma-informed mental health practice that serves people of all identities and walks of life. Our main values include providing quality trauma therapy, inclusivity, and accessibility. We accept multiple insurances and have sliding-scale spots to make treatment as accessible as possible. Additionally, we provide many free mental health resources through our website (blog, workshops, classes, list of online / community resources) and social media platforms to share mental health education for those who are not able to attend therapy or would like to supplement their therapy. We stay up to date on the newest research and trainings so that we can provide the best and most innovative care to our clients that considers all aspects of their life and health. We pride ourselves on a collaborative model in which client and therapist work closely together to create a plan that matches the client’s goals, and unique life experiences / identities.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective way to grow our referral list has been connecting with like-minded businesses in our community and online. We frequently research other health professionals in our area and reach out to have a brief meeting where we can meet face to face, get a sense of each business, and see if there is a need we can provide for each other. It has been so fun to connect with a variety of businesses and practices across the state. We like to provide holistic care for our clients, so we don’t just connect with other mental health professionals but also with sleep clinics, medical doctors, psychiatrists, personal trainers, nutritionists, massage therapists, etc.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Absolutely! Psychology / mental health has been a passion of mine since before high school. I am so grateful and proud to be a psychologist with a specialty in trauma work because it is so needed in the field. It has been such an exciting time to be doing this work as stigma around mental health is slowly starting to lessen and people are becoming more aware around trauma and its impact on their lives. Not to mention all of the new research and treatment modalities. There are so many people who are looking to start therapy and process trauma, and I am so grateful for each client I get to work with.
