We recently connected with Kylie Sawisch and have shared our conversation below.
Kylie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
There is a lot to be happy about when you work creatively and on your own terms! While I consider myself very fortunate to have transformed my passion into a profession, I must admit that it is not without its challenges. Without definitive criteria for determining what is “great work”, it becomes easier for me to doubt my abilities and question whether or not I stack up to the accomplishments of others. Despite these struggles, the fulfillment I find in my work as a perfumer far exceeds anything I encountered while perusing a traditional career path.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Kylie Sawisch and I am a self taught oil perfumer working with natural and synthetic materials to create niche perfumes.
Perfumery is both a science and an art, but I consider myself to be much more of the latter. There is an inherent artistry when it comes to making perfume that goes beyond just mixing and blending things. It involves tapping into your emotions, memories, and personal connections. My best works are deeply rooted in my personal experiences, encompassing not only the moments of triumph and joy but also the challenges, imperfections, and even the seemingly ordinary aspects of life. With each perfume I curate, a unique story unfolds.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Yes! While social media is widely recognized as a powerful marketing tool, I have found that it is very useful beyond ordinary promotional purposes. Connecting with other perfumers through social media has been so transformative for both my personal growth and the growth of my business. There is unique sense of camaraderie and willingness to support one another within our community.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
There is no shortage of well-intentioned nine-to-fivers offering suggestions on what I could be doing to increase my income. While more money always sounds nice, I am cautious about the trade-offs it may entail. I pursue endeavors that align with my passions bring genuine satisfaction to my life. As long as my lights are on and there’s food on the table, I am happy in maintaining the current pace at which I am progressing.
