We recently connected with Kylie Barrett and have shared our conversation below.
Kylie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
My first client reached out to me on September 22, 2022. It was a women who was an old family friend that reached out to me to order dessert items for an upcoming baby shower she was planning. She ordered a few pumpkins chocolate chip cookies (one of my favorites!) and lemon bars. I was so excited to fulfill my first order and couldn’t be happier that not even one month after launching my home baking business, I had received a customer!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Kylie Barrett, I have been baking since I was a little girl. My grandmother was the person who introduced me to baking and has taught me everything I know to this day. I started The Crafted Cake in late August 2022 to follow my passion for baking. I wanted to make customer’s dessert dreams come to life and create a personalized experience. The Crafted Cake is currently an at home baking business that fulfills custom orders for cakes, cupcakes, cake pops, cookies, brownies, and more! I offer dessert items that are completely customizable including choice of sizing, flavor, design, display, etc. I believe the in-depth personalization is what makes The Crafted Cake stand out.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I am still working on growing my social media pages, however I have been consistently gaining new followers every day. I believe the key is to post consistently. Once I started posting almost every day on my Instagram story and making multiple posts about the same items or event, my page grew faster. I have also received a lot of support from other Arizona small businesses. I also believe that Instagram and Facebook reels have helped me grow my social media presence.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I have attempted to gain new clients in multiple different ways, and I have seen success in all forms. In the beginning I was only present on Instagram and was posting on there in attempt to gain a following and hopefully customers. After all, my first client reached out to me over Instagram messaging. Soon after I joined Facebook and started joining different business and baking groups on Facebook. I will constantly comment on various posts of people reaching out to local bakers. I have gained a few of my customers by commenting on their post and messaging over Facebook Messenger. I have had a couple of people reach out to me and say that somebody referred them to me. This is a great compliment and I hope to grow my business by more word of mouth referrals. Lastly, I participate in local vendor markets. I have gained a few customers following these markets after they bought dessert items from me.
