We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kylie Bady. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kylie below.
Hi Kylie, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I began teaching myself how to use my camera and Lightroom at home via YouTube and TikTok. I actually commented on one of Mallory Kessel’s asking how she had improved her photography so much from starting (the video was a comparison of her first work to now). She answered telling me to attend photo meetups, and so I did that for a while. It gave me content to create and practice on. After learning a bit I posted on Facebook looking for a wedding photography mentor. A couple reached out to me and let me join them second shooting weddings in exchange for Matt giving me tons of tips and tricks and I could also use the content for my portfolio. After that, I just kept at it. Watching videos, listening to Pod Casts (Jai Long is my favorite), and playing around taking photos and editing. I don’t think there is a lot I could have done to speed up my learning. It actually all happened pretty quickly, and I am still learning a lot. I think its just something that requires work and time.
The most essential skills have been learning my camera and connecting with other photographers. By working with other photographers when questions do pop up, most people are willing to help and share knowledge!
Right now, I am still learning. I don’t think there are really any obstacles…just things that I have to look more into
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hiiiii! Im Kylie. Im an elopement, engagement, and wedding photographer. I started taking photos for my son’s first birthday. My husband was tired of me spending so much money on getting photos for every milestone, and knew I was interested in photography. So he pushed me to learn myself, so I could just take photos of our son. Then the more I learned I became interested in shooting weddings.
I think what really sets me apart is my laid, back and fun demeanor. I like to enjoy myself at weddings, and although its work, I feel like I’m just along for the ride most of the time. Not to say that I don’t give direction. I do direct in the moments that need it, but am more of just a supporter in the other moments. That is how I am able to get a mix of candid photos, and the posed ones as well.
And I think the most important things for potential clients to know is that, I care about what you care about. If there’s something important in your wedding, those are the things that matter to me too. I want my pictures to really convey your big day in the most magical, but natural way.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Its the connecting with people. I love making art, because its a really great outlet/ interest for me. But more than that, connecting with people for such special moments is the best. I’ve always been such a romantic at heart (despite trying to pretend I wasn’t when I was younger) so its really fulfilling and gives me all the feels when I see people so in love with their partners. Or like at weddings, hearing all the speeches from your closest loved ones. Those moments are everything
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
yes! Jai Long’s podcast is AMAZING. He is a mix of super motivating, and also educational.
