We recently connected with Kylie Adams and have shared our conversation below.
Kylie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
We all know that comparison is the thief of joy. Those words never ring more true in the eyes of someone pursuing a path in a creative field. It is so incredibly easy to limit your self based on the sheer fact that you might not have the “ideal” timeline or financial means to succeed. However, I strongly believe there is no “right way” to be an actor.
I am from an incredibly small town in Northern California. I mean REALLY small, with around 100 people in my graduating class and a 40 minute drive to the nearest Target. I fell in love with performing around the age of 4, putting on concerts for my parents in the living room and rewatching CATS on VHS. My parents were incredibly supportive of me and I started acting in community theatre starting at age eight. I loved it, more than I had ever loved anything else in my life. I knew it was what I was put on this earth to do. I continued with this throughout high school and then went to community college. Keep in mind I did not have much professional vocal training, acting or dance training before college. It was when I transferred to UC Irvine that I realized I was behind a lot of actors my age. I had natural talent, but in my head that wasn’t enough. However, I worked very hard in college and was among the first in my class to be chosen to study for a B.F.A in fine arts, an audition only program. I did a lot of personal work to work on my self confidence, which at the end of the day is the biggest asset anyone can have.
In the age of social media, it is WAY too easy to feel even more like a small fish in a large pond. Especially living in the sphere of LA where everyone has practically had an agent since they were in diapers with the connections of the best acting, dance, and singing training out there. Of course I WISH sometimes that I had those kind of fundamentals but my exact path, every single aspect of it, has made me the actress I am. The unique vocalist I am. The authentic storytelller I am. It may take me longer to upstart my professional career into what I want it to look like, but at the end of the day I have the same chances to succeed in my career as anyone else. I firmly believe if you put in the work and be kind to others along the way, the universe will give back to you. It is never too late to start a dream.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The best thing society can do is for casting directors and artistic directors to seek NEW talent. In order for entertainment to evolve, we need fresh eyes and fresh stories. The more inclusion and diversity, the wider the net of people who will seek to see live theatre and fill seats.
