We were lucky to catch up with Kylei Mitchell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kylei, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I knew I wanted to pursue this path when I was in high school. I had always loved being creative and artistic, but I really indulged myself into makeup when I was fourteen. I didn’t start out with much but I always managed to do something different and make myself feel pretty. I watched makeup videos for tips and tricks and always looked for makeup looks to try, then one day I decided to start posting pictures of my own looks and my journey took off from there.
Kylei, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Telling people about me has never been easy, I never know what I should say but I’ll give it a shot. I’m Kylei and I’m not only a makeup artist but I’m a momma to a beautiful two year old boy and my crazy kitten. I’m only 23 and work from home most days so I get to be with my family a lot. I started posting pictures of my makeup looks when I was younger and even did a few looks for weddings. After finding out that I had a talent I decided to go to cosmetology school to extend my knowledge. The experience was amazing and really helped me let out my creative side. It makes me really proud that I was able to find something that I love to do and I’m proud of the work I’ve been able to do. I hope I can have more people follow me in my journey and I’ve always hoped that I could work with brands in the industry.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I feel like I always had two corners of people. Those who supported me and pushed me to keep going and those who thought I was kind of odd for choosing this path instead of something “traditional”. At the end of the day I found something that really made me happy to work, something that I can treat as my own business. I always have fun with what I do and still can find the time to be with friends and family outside of that. Whether you are creative or not I feel like you should find something that brings you joy and also allows you to balance out life and work.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being a makeup artist has allowed me to make not only myself feel beautiful but to make others feel beautiful as well. I also feel like when I make posts on social media, I inspire others to to pursue the life they want. I love to let my followers know that I wouldn’t be able to do the things I love without them and it’s true, without them I wouldn’t have the confidence to do what I do or even post about it.
