Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kyle Thiele. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kyle, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
How I learned to do what I do was simply by trying. I never took a painting class and found that just playing with the medium was a great puzzle for my brain to solve. Adapting to the canvas and medium was an essential lesson. Not always controlling the interaction between paint and surface and reacting to the moves or mistakes I make. Obstacles that have stood in the way of learning more have often been just the inability to be comfortable. But, those first steps are the hardest and once you take one, they get easier on stride. Repetition is key to practice.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Kyle Thiele is a midwestern self-taught artist who was born in the farmlands of Ohio. He is currently based in Dayton, OH. Kyle is one of six kids and has been a frequent collaborator with his brothers. He has OCD and his work is often a form of breaking the patterns and numbers he has had to separate himself from. His love of music, basketball and textures is where his work is focused.
His passions include symbology, visual storytelling and the relationship between myth and culture. Oil paint is his predominant medium, due to the patience it requires and the density it conveys. He enjoys slow art and folk art as a combination for reflection and meditation.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being an artist is the permission it gives oneself to look around at the world. Often the going-one can be a distraction from processing the environment around us and how we engage with it. Art is a philosophy of observing and then sharing the information that has been processed.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
A goal of mine as a creative is to keep creating and build upon the experiences and art I have made. I aim to have a body of work that explores my relationship to time and my place in it.
