We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Telly. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Telly below.
Telly, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
In my experience, I’ve always had difficulty working jobs I had no passion for. I feel like I never fit in a 9-5 box because I found myself working on someone else’s needs instead of my own. As a creative, I’m in charge of what I do, when I do it, and how I feel about it. I’m grateful for all my experiences at past jobs and all they’ve taught me, but being my own boss and working on something i’m passionate about daily is irreplaceable. Creativity strikes at any point of the day. My inspiration becomes much more limited having to dedicate time to a regular job. Having my own time back gives me the freedom to explore and capitalize on my artistry.
Telly, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Telly. My love for music started at a very young age. I was five when I held my first trumpet and knew I met my soulmate. Having attended art schools and camps throughout my childhood, I was always surrounded by talent and creativity. As I grew up, I began developing a passion for other genres such as hip hop and r&b music. Being classically trained I never understood it, but I had a growing appreciation for the sounds. It wasn’t until I attended a rap concert in high school that sparked my inspiration to learn music production. With my production skills strengthening, I was able to find ways to combine my classical training, latino background, and growing love for multiple music genres to create my own sound.
Today, I am a full-time music producer and DJ and offer audio engineering services. My brands main emphasis is versatility, looking to bring you the best quality of service, sound, and solution to your needs. Since I don’t like to put myself in a box, I am open and willing to work with artists of any kind with a desire to work on whatever type of music they please.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think one of the most rewarding aspects of being a creative is having the ability to evoke emotion in others. It’s used as an avenue to express yourself when words don’t seem to work and a way to conjugate words to share an experience that others can relate to. It’s a powerful tool that almost everyone uses and feels at some point in their life. To be able to create something, from start to finish, that could make a random person smile, love themselves more, or even think of a random memory they’re sonically reminded of is a gift that I’ll never take for granted. Even if you put two people from across the world in the same room who do not speak the same language, music will be one of their only forms of communication. It is and always will be a universal language.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think non-creatives will have trouble understanding the uncertainty you’ll face along the way to accomplishing your goal. In traditional careers, there’s usually paths and methods laid out for you to achieve your next task. Although some aspects can be applied to creatives, the journey to your goal is much more complex. There is not one set blueprint to follow to get to where you want to be. Instead, there are multiple paths that can be taken that will each be based on multiple factors. Some may take you a few months or many years. Others may require you to meet 100 people or a few people to meet the person who will help you expand your career. The possibilities are endless. The only common denominators I see in all the creative methods is the raw passion you have for your craft and the unwavering belief you need in yourself. No matter what path you’re on or how long it takes, you will get to your end goal with those attributes.
