We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kyle Railton. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kyle below.
Kyle , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
I believe a big part in growth is the ability to take risks. We have created this business on believing in ourselves and putting that belief first when deciding to take on projects that may have seemed out of reach. One project that stands out as a turning point in out company was a 12,000 square foot estate nestled right on Lake Tahoe. The designer and client wanted every surface, showers included, in a beautiful off-white Venetian Plaster finish and needed it done in a timely manner. At this point, myself and my partner were the only two people on our team capable of executing such a finish. The rest of our crew were primarily drywall hangers and finishers. I knew our team was incredible and I believed in my partner and my skills in preparing the team for such a show piece. We took the risk and put in our bid for the project and were awarded the opportunity. In order to quickly train our team on how to accomplish this high end Venetian Plaster finish, I covered all my furniture in plastic and prepared my whole house to be practiced on. Over the next couple of weeks, we patched in Venetian Plaster experts over Zoom and our team covered my house in magic. With a two week training we moved onto the largest job we had ever done and through determination, hard work, long hours and a vision, we pulled off what seemed impossible. We still work with the same clients to this day and what seemed impossible is now almost common.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I stumbled into Venetian Plaster almost by accident. As a local drywall contractor, I was asked on a handful of occasions if I did a thing call Venetian Plaster. On one of those occasions, I decided to say yes, then figure out how to follow through on that yes. I tracked down a place to do a simple coarse, which ignited a fire inside of me that I have been fueling ever since.
What sets me apart is that continued passion to learn. I have traveled abroad on multiple occasions seeking out the best teachers and have even flown some here to work with my team. That passion has been recognized by our suppliers of Venetian plaster and I now travel and instruct others. I strive to light similar fires inside of new applicators and continue my journey of learning along the way.

How’d you meet your business partner?
Honestly, the first time I met my business partner was in grade school. He broke my neighbors finger so I figured I would teach him a lesson. We had a little scuffle and by the end realized we had a lot more in common than we had differences. We became fast friends and worked for his parents drywall company all through high school. When I went out on my own, there was no one else I would have chose as a business partner. I have always been the risk taker and the idea generator and Chris has always been the power house helping me to complete every new job we took on. We have always made a pretty unstoppable team.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Bottom line is quality. We have never strayed from our main focus being on quality and no matter how long it takes us, we don’t leave a job until the client is satisfied. This was sometimes hard in the beginning when we were still struggling to build our company but it created an extremely strong reputation that we have proudly stood behind. We are lucky to be in a small niche with Venetian Plaster, even though the popularity is growing rapidly, where most of our clientele comes from word of mouth. We make sure that the experience is exceptional from start to finish, not just with the Venetian Plaster itself but with our communication, customer service and enthusiasm to bring our clients vision to reality.
