We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kyle Myrick a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kyle thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I had just finished a 6 month professional performing contract and realized I didn’t want to perform as a job. I wanted to do it out of love, not for money. At that time there was no opportunity for community members to perform as a passion. So, I started Hurricane Theatrical as a place to create theatre arts out of the passion for the art. I am glad to still be here after 13 years.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My interest in theatre began my senior year of high school. I signed up to do a show because a girl convinced me. I fell in love with the art form and not the girl, although maybe I should thank her! I started Hurricane Theatrical because I wanted to have a space that fostered a passion for story telling and the theatre arts. I love that every cast I have, I somehow convince them to spend all this time away from their families and other commitments to help create something magical and bigger than themselves. That’s magic! If you come and see a Hurricane Theatrical production, you will walk out with something more than you expected. That’s a promise!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Passion! This theatre company was built upon the passion I had for the artform and it’s so rewarding to see people sign up for that ideal! To work hard and for the love of what we do!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I honestly think theatre is as much a selfish art form as it is selfless. It is selfless because it is an incredible team sport and at the end of the day, the reward is that you worked hard with your team to obtain the overall objective. But, it’s also selfish because you grow so much and become a better person the more you put into it.
