Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kyle Muha. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kyle, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Success means different things to different people, depending on who you ask. For me, I believe true success comes from loving what you do, staying inspired, and constantly striving to improve. Those are the key ingredients, in my opinion. At the end of the day, if I’m doing what I love and can support myself, that’s what I consider being successful.
Kyle, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Kyle Muha, and I’m a photographer based in Northwest Indiana. I’ve been into photography for about 7 years, and for the last year, it’s been my full-time profession. Originally, I went to college to become an audio engineer and was studying at a school in Chicago. During the three years I spent there, I found myself with a lot of downtime between classes, and that’s when I picked up a camera for the first time. Over time, I became completely obsessed with improving my photography skills. Eventually, my passion for photography surpassed my love for music and audio engineering, completely shifting the direction of my life. I haven’t put my camera down since.
Professionally, I focus on a wide range of photography, from real estate and concerts to engagements, weddings, business headshots, family photos, food photography, and more. I think the biggest value I bring to my clients is the ability to say “yes” to almost any project. Over the course of my career, I’ve made sure to gain experience in different areas of photography, which has allowed me to handle a variety of work with confidence.
What I’m most proud of is taking a huge leap of faith in 2024 by starting my own photography business. It was all about believing in myself and, more importantly, trusting my abilities as a photographer. I got to capture so many incredible moments that I never could have imagined just a year ago. And honestly, I’m excited because I know it’s only going to keep getting better from here.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I know this might not be groundbreaking, but it really boils down to three main resources: friends in the hobby, strangers on Instagram, and YouTube. Asking questions to people who have experience is where you’ll get some of the best advice on how to approach a shoot or gig.
It took me a while to build the confidence to reach out to people on Instagram and ask how they achieved a certain look, edit, or vibe on one of their posts. You’d be surprised at how many people are genuinely excited to help and share their process. A lot of them are just happy to connect with someone who’s into the same thing and are more than willing to be an open book.
Like many photographers, I’m self-taught, and YouTube has been a goldmine for anything related to photography, editing, and videography. It’s an endless resource for learning, and I find myself on there almost every day picking up new tips and techniques.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
There are so many rewarding aspects to being a photographer, but I’ll keep it short. Professionally, there’s no better feeling than sending final edits to a client and seeing their genuine reaction to how much they love the photos. No matter how long I’ve been doing this, I still get butterflies when I hit “send.” The relief I feel when I get that first response is tough to beat.
On a personal level, photography brings me joy and inspiration every day. It connects me with so many different people, and it drives me to travel and explore as much as I can. A camera is my way of seeing the world and freezing moments in time with a single click.
