We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kyle McMillan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kyle, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
A pastor friend of mine reached out to me in 2021 during the pandemic, seeking creative solutions for an unused rooms on his church property. I proposed the idea of setting up a small barbershop with four chairs. That conversation led him to establish a business co-op for aspiring entrepreneurs, providing them with the space and support they needed to develop their ventures. I became a member of the co-op and began my journey in creating Forte Barbershop. While I’ve faced challenges along the way, I’m thankful and excited to witness the growth of this blessing from God, as it helps other barbers and business owners succeed.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve been a professional drummer for over 20 years and have been self-employed since 2013. I own several businesses outside of Forte, so entrepreneurship wasn’t new to me. However, entering the beauty industry was a fresh endeavor. My twin brother was in barber school at the time, and I recognized a great opportunity for him upon his graduation. Since he completed his training, he has taken over the management of the shop, which is thriving and attracting new customers each week. I strongly believe in providing clients with an excellent experience from the moment they walk in. Our shop has a welcoming, home-like atmosphere, filled with comfort, laughter, and engaging conversations. I’m especially proud of my ability to empower my team members to become successful entrepreneurs and business owners. Many of them are new to the business world, and I enjoy providing them with the tools and guidance to help them avoid the mistakes I’ve made over the years. Being a coach and mentor to them brings me great joy.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
The most effective way to lead and inspire a team is to be present and work alongside them. Focus on encouragement and motivation rather than highlighting their mistakes. Offer resources that support their ongoing development in both their skills and the business.

Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
I funded my business through family support and by saving money from my music gigs. If possible, I recommend keeping a job while you work on your business. Having a job and saving money instills discipline and teaches valuable money management skills. If you truly believe in your vision, you’ll do whatever it takes to make it a reality. Sacrifice and patience are essential for success in business. The early stages may be challenging, but trust the process; in time, you will see the rewards.
