We recently connected with Kyle Leung and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kyle, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I was dissatisfied with the media landscape regarding the lack of Asian representation in the West. I felt like I was constantly searching for any media that would highlight Asian voices but it would often fall short in terms of representing the full Asian experience in the West. I didn’t want other Asians in the diaspora especially those in their childhood/teenage years to feel like this and also have to live through their formative years not having Asian stories from the diaspora to inspire and motivate them to live their best lives. That was when I knew I needed to do it myself and embark on the creative path and try to create media that will highlight more complete and diverse Asian stories from those in the diaspora.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Kyle, a Hong Kong Chinese Canadian who lives with his wife and child in Singapore. I spent most of my life in Canada and did a stint working in Asia specifically in Taiwan and Singapore. I have a normal full-time job outside of the creative industry. On the side, I began a podcast called, “What Kind of Asian Are You?” in 2020 where I interview Asians from the diaspora about their lives, stories and experiences to help highlight, amplify, and validate Asian voices. The podcast started first as a pandemic project where I just wanted to talk to cool Asians about the cool things that they do and to step my foot into the creative side of things in a medium that I enjoy taking part in as a listener. The podcast allowed me to interview and connect with really cool Asians from the diaspora who as creatives, entrepreneurs, academics and amazing human beings in general just to name a few. Through having done close to 100 episodes now and interviewinged more than 50+ different guests from all walks of life, I have now gained a true passion for podcasting/content creation along with having a mission to truly use my platform to help highlight Asian voices and stories in the podcast space. The podcast is still a side project that I do intend to grow and monetize but the main thing will always be having fun and interviewing cool people on the podcast. However, I have grown the podcast, the brand and also myself as a podcaster where I would freelance and help produce/edit other podcasts as well. Also, looking for other interesting podcast/content creating opportunities to hop on.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I want young Asians in the diaspora to have a medium to hear and see other Asians in the diaspora who have gone through life and are doing (did) amazing things so that they can feel inspired and motivated to do great things as well. Also, I want to have stories out in the platform that can help Asians in the diaspora to feel less alone.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I first built my audience on social media by creating engaging and relatable content. It will always be about meaningful content no matter what you do. Once you create content, you need to find the right channels to share your content and let people become aware of your content and your brand. Joining groups that are in your niche where you connect and share with fellow like-minded people will also help as like-minded individuals would always be willing to help share what they connect with. Network with those in your industry to see what they do and learn from them.
