We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kyle Lawless a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kyle, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I’ve been fortunate enough to have a lot of passion projects under my belt; ones that I was able to formulate, plan and execute with the vision I originally had. The most important one is upcoming this spring/summer. My grandparents have been living in the same home for almost 50 years. It is almost a larger than life location in and of itself. I spent so much time there as a kid and still find myself over there almost every other Sunday as an adult.
Sadly it is time for them to sell it and move closer to my parents so that they can assist them with care. I had an idea to document that upcoming process; and show the good and not so good side of transitioning from a place with so many memories. I’m sure it will be a difficult process physically, mentally and emotionally, but one that I think will provide closure and catharsis for myself and my family.
I said to my fiancé and my creative partners that I think it is the most important project I could possibly ever do.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Kyle Lawless; I am a digital creator based out of Baltimore, Maryland. My main focus is video based digital content, including short form videos on Youtube; as well as longer podcast/weekly show based content on Youtube and Spotify.
I got my start in the creative space through music. I played in a band in the Baltimore area for about 7 years and got a chance to meet and network with other local creatives. Unfortunately when the pandemic and lockdowns hit it brought an end to the band. Though I found myself still with a creative drive, but my long term outlet now gone. In the past I had worked for a company that did video and audio recording/editing for medical conferences. So I took the knowledge I had learned there, bought a camera and began to teach myself the in’s and out’s of filming. That led me to create 100 Miles: my creative alias/banner. We started with a bi-monthly show called “100 Miles: From Home” where I interviewed other Baltimore based creatives about their current and upcoming projects. Though my start began in music (and my initial guests were musician based) I expanded to people in the fields of ceramics, cooking, medical marijuana education and more.
That was the project that really got the ball rolling for me and built up my confidence to continue. From there I’ve created more original content on my 100 Miles Youtube page, as well as collaborated with artists such as Laelanonymous, Jadoni and Olijade to create music videos, live performance footage and promotional material for each artist respectfully.
I enjoy being creative and to collaborate not only with my friends but with other like minded Baltimore based creatives. I feel as if I have barely scratched the surface of what I intend to do.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
For me, anything creative or artistic has always been about escapism, meaning that I could always find solace, community or joy from anything creative. Whether it be a show that I liked growing up, a song, or anything that made me feel excited to provide that same feeling for someone else.
Therefore my goal has been just that: to create some level of enjoyment or escapism from all of the stress that reality causes us each day. If I could provide someone with something they enjoyed for even just a few minutes, to me that would be meeting my mission.
Additionally we have created some pieces of merchandise that we’ve sold on our website; and a large portion of the sales from that have gone to local Baltimore charities. Providing support to these essential things in our community is something that I’ve wanted to do and will continue to do as long as we are putting stuff out.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
My biggest influence in terms of philosophy and creative inspiration comes from the TV channel Adult Swim. They found and continue to find a way to blend outlandish cartoons, shows and themes while simultaneously integrating foreign programming and underground music.
Creatively that sounds like an impossible task to combine all of those things simultaneously, while continuing to stay cutting edge with up and coming visual artists and musicians. As a kid I found some of my favorite art styles through their programming. Additionally, it was labeled “adult swim” so I felt like it was this secret underground channel that came on for adults after Cartoon Network ended. As a young impressionable kid this made me only want to watch it more.
