We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kyle Kania. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kyle below.
Kyle, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love for you to start by sharing your thoughts about the pros and cons of family businesses.
While I started Kksportscards at 21 years old, it has definitely grown into a family atmosphere in the office. I was lucky enough to have friends and family that wanted to support me and help from the very beginning. Due to the help they offered I was able to hire on family, friends from elementary school-college, guys I played baseball with, college roommates and even our neighborhood mailman! The ability to trust the people I have working for me has been a complete game changer and I am extremely grateful for that. This also creates a very close knit, family like feel while we work and gives everyone the ability to enjoy working together. When I have children I would love for them to enjoy sports cards and join the business but at the end of the day I want them to do whatever their passionate about. I whole heartedly agree with the saying “if you do what you love you’ll never have to work a day in your life.”
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
From the time I was young I’ve always loved sports cards but specifically baseball cards. I played baseball from the time I was in elementary school all the way through college so I never lost the love for the sport. I remember asking for cards for every holiday, birthday, etc. and would collect them. This company started when I was a teenager and asked for a PSA Grading membership for Christmas. I was submitting my own cards to PSA in California to make extra money while I was in High School/College and playing baseball. Due to how many cards I was sending on my own, the company reached out to give me a special membership so I could send in for others. During my senior year of college (2020) I hurt my arm playing and had to take a break. During that break I started sending cards in to be graded for others to make extra money on the side. Once COVID happened the hobby really took off and that is how Kksportscards was born!
We currently have an office, a store front location, 70+ employees and 4 different divisions within our company. The first division we have is the store front card shop. This shop is located in Largo, FL and is open 7 days a week! There you will be able to find sports cards, pokemon cards, graded cards, sealed boxes and supplies. We also have 12 TVs that play the sports channels, large couches, free cards for kids and snacks so people of all ages can enjoy. We are constantly buying and trading so if you have anything you would like to sell please bring it in!
The next division we have is our grading services. Grading is where you can send a card in to one of these companies, they will grade they card based on condition and then put it in a holder with a description tag on it. In most cases, the higher the grade the more valuable your card now is. We are currently the largest group submission service for PSA and SGC. All of the services we offer, pricing and specials can be found on www.kksportscards.com.
Moving on we have 6 live streaming channels. We have 5 live streaming channels on the Whatnot app and 1 on Fanatics Live. On both platforms we offer baseball breaks. This is where you’re able to watch our breakers open cards for you live on camera and win your favorite sports team. You also have the opportunity to pull massive cards that can be worth a lot. All of our channels are live almost 24/7 so make sure you’re bookmarking our shows so you don’t miss out!
Lastly, we offer a consignment service. We currently have 4 consignment channels on the Whatnot app. You’re able to send in the cards you’d like consigned, we sell them within a few days and you’re paid out after that. It’s an extremely fast process and you’re able to see your cards be sold live. For all information on our consignment services please email consignment@kksportscards.com.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Our presence was built on social media by doing a few different things. The first thing we did was constant communication. We answered 100’s of DM’s every day and made sure they were checked multiple through out the day. We tried to communicate with customers and answer questions as quickly as possible so there was a trust they built in us. Another thing we did to build our social media presence was consistent posting. We do a post called “The Kksportscards Card of the Day” where we highlight customers cards that have come back for grading. These videos are filmed and then posted to our social media at least 3 times a week. We are also extremely consistent with posting on the story and engaging with our customers.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
One thing that I believe helped build our reputation within the market was constant communication. We were and still are, always updating customers on the status of their orders, the new products coming out, how our processes work, etc. We really pride ourselves on great customer service and communication. We also are extremely transparent with our customers so they feel comfortable sending their cards through us. We really worked hard to build a strong trust within the community where customers can feel at home and know exactly what to expect.
