We recently connected with Kyle Dal Santo and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kyle, thanks for joining us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
When I was in 5th grade I saw Spielberg’s “Saving Private Ryan” and its absolutely shook me. So much so in fact that I decided that day that when I grew up I would follow in my Grandfathers’ and Godfather’s footsteps and also join the military – which I did after high school. It also shook me that such a movie could be made, and I became obsessed with the movie making process, For the rest of junior high I would “borrow” my parents old camcorder (this was the late nineties) and film little action and war movies with my friends in our backyards.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As a kid I was obsessed with movies and reading. I was a very quiet and shy kid with zero social skills and so the characters in my favorite stories became my imaginary friends. And I would imagine myself within them, sometimes even trying to dress up as the characters and act out the scenes while they played in the background. After the Marines I needed a hobby to help keep my mind focused and to help me feel normal again. I took an intro to acting course at a place called TVI Acting Studios in Chicago, and the hobby became a passion. Fifteen years and over a hundred and fifty acting projects later, it has become my main focus in life.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal has always been the same. To make a living telling stories. To be a part of the creative process that drives the entertainment industry. The world is filled with so many incredible people, and so many of their journeys, adventures, sagas etc are out there, and we can learn so much from them! I love learning, and I love discovering, and telling stories is a way to take it all in and channel it into something that people can relate to, that they can learn from, that they can find inspiring within their own lives.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I love art and entertainment that forces people to rethink, to re-imagine their world or their life. It’s kind of a drug high for me to watch someone travel on the roller coaster of a good story… to see the looks on their faces, to hear their gasps or laughter. To make someone feel something they didn’t intend to. Some of my favorite movies/books/video games are the ones that break the fourth wall, or are so self aware that they force you – the fly on the wall – to join in and feel it yourself, to place yourself within the character’s world.
