We were lucky to catch up with Kyle Colton recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kyle thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I’m extremely happy living as an artist.
I’ve already worked a “regular” job for about four years when I first moved to Los Angeles
I can’t imagine myself going back to a 9-5 job. I felt like I was giving too much energy to what I was not passionate about
Even when acting work is slow or I have time between projects, I love the freedom I have to be creative
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Kyle Colton. I’ve been an actor for about 25 years.
I started doing theater back in Michigan where I grew up. I acted in my first film at 16 years old, and I knew from that point on, that I wanted to focus on film acting
I’ve always been a huge movie buff. A student of the work of Pacino, DeNiro, Daniel Day Lewis, Tom Hanks, Denzel, Dustin Hoffman, Jack Nicholson…many of the classic leading men over the last 50 years.
I’m constantly submitting myself for roles. I narrate audiobooks (over 50 currently on Amazon).
I’m a hard worker and I will always bring something unique to the performance and do my best to bring a unique take to a role
I’m always courteous, early to set and ready to bring the directors vision to life. I’m willing to do whatever is best for the role
I’ve lived in Los Angeles pursuing acting for 12 years now, and this has been my most productive year to date. I just filmed a movie in Malaysia, playing Jesus. I’ve played a serpent, wearing wonderful prosthetics. The roles are getting more and more eclectic
It doesn’t matter who your agent is, if you have the “right” look; at the end of the day, it’s in God’s hands whether to put the thought in someone’s mind to cast you. I believe creatives (and people in general) give too much power to other human beings. Give it to God.
I’m looking forward to what God has planned next for me.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is getting the opportunity to create something new every time you walk on set, or put paint to canvas, etc.
As an artist, you really have to learn to live in the moment. Because there will be challenging days where you lose a job last minute, or the script will change last minute. Maybe the director is in a bad mood…
But you get to create something unique to you, on the spot…and it’s captured on film forever. It’s very freeing and it’s special because most people are afraid to do it.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My ultimate goal is to make films or give performances that positively inspire people
I worked on a web series last year that I had no idea had a sizable following on social media. Fans of the series reached out to me when the show ended, telling me that my performance was a comfort for them when things were not going well for them at home, in their family life, or mentally. One fan even told me that watching my character in the series kept her in a comforting mental headspace, and kept her from attempting suicide.
I had no idea I was having that kind of impact on someone.
That is why I became an actor
So I hope I can positively impact more people through my performances
Because at the end of the day…entertainment is supposed to uplift, motivate or improve our quality of life
