We were lucky to catch up with Kyla Pendleton recently and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, Kyla thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.

I came up with the idea for my business after my grandmother passed away in 2015. I was battling depression, dropped out of college and quit my job and at that moment I knew that I needed something to help me cope with everything that I had going on.

My name is Kyla pendleton and I am the founder of Fifty Two Cosmetics. Fifty Two Cosmetics is a cosmetics line that offers a range of different beauty products. We offer lipsticks, lipglosses, eyeshadows, highlighters, false eyelashes and more. I am also the owner of the lash vault vending machine which is a vending machine that is filled with our false eyelashes where our local customers can skip the shipping fee and grab their lashes in less than 30 seconds..

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?

A time where I had to pivot in my business would definitely have to be when Covid-19 came along. It was so hard to keep my business afloat while going through this world wide pandemic. Orders being delayed, inventory coming a month or two late and even going 4-6 weeks without orders . Not only did I have to shift gears to keep my business running but I had to think of a creative, safe and smart way to do it.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?

Starting my business came from my savings. When I first started I had no idea how to apply for business loans or grants to help me. So, I used my savings and my personal checks to get started. Inventory, marketing, website, shipping everything came from my bank account.
