We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kyla Demas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kyla, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Courage and consistency will help you become successful. I also believe that having an idea and working towards executing it will help build success. I’m still in that stage where I’m creating new clothes and working on better content, so I can have the resources to better my brand. It takes resources to build success, and I want my brand to be as successful, so staying creative, being consistent, and taking calculated risks will elevate me, and it will help push my KYLA NYC.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
It starred in high school. I attended a high school that taught the basics of being a designer. I learned how to sew, drape, and sketch, and I realized that this was something I wanted to continue.
During college, I would research clothing brands and create vision boards for my brand. Kyla Nyc is a clothing brand that is elevating people’s style.
During the pandemic, I started to make
Bucket hats. I realized that this was one piece of my brand that I was invested in so I started making more. I then started to test different fabrics, styles, and now I’m working on selling and creating custom bucket hats. Outside of clothing, I feel like everyone should own a bucket hat and I’ve been working on different styles. I sew for myself but I’ve been working on hats for people and I see that people enjoy wearing hats and I want to create custom clothing and accessories. This is just the beginning but my direction is clear.

Any fun sales or marketing stories?
Back in February, I started testing faux fur fabric. I then created a fur hat. I documented the process and posted it on TikTok, and I then shared it on Twitter. I received a lot of good feedback, and people were eager to buy, which motivated me to start selling this particular style. I like to work on my ideas and not so much on trends, but fur hats are in, and I noticed that people gravitated toward my hats. From the color to the size, I saw a lot of good feedback and people requesting this style.
I took the risk by purchasing more fabric and creating the hats. Although I’m still at the infant stage with my brand, people still supported me, and it’s proof that it’s not always about the ‘what if’s’; it’s about starting. Once you start, the right people will gravitate towards you.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I’m learning that everything takes time. I don’t have to have everything figured out, and it’s okay to know. What I learned years ago is helping me, but be eager to learn. I want/will create so much from ready-to-wear outfits, costumes, more hats, and so on, so I can’t say no to learning. I also have to price my products better. Hard work is being done. And to give myself patience. It’s a lot, but I feel like KYLA NYC will expand in a couple of years.
