Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kyanté Brumfield. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kyanté, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I consider myself an ABA therapist at day and a singer/entertainer at night. I am passionate about helping families and children on the Autism Spectrum but music will always be my first love. I’ve been a singer and a performer since I could say the word “sing”. Singing and performing started for me in church like every little southern, country girl. It wasn’t until I attended high school that I realized I could do this music thing professionally. I joined the choir and became interested in doing theatre. I dedicated my time to perfecting my craft as a vocalist and a performer. My success as a vocal performer in high school gave me the momentum to want to continue to pursue this career in college. I went off to college and studied vocal performance as my major. I was very optimistic about my college journey but didn’t realize the challenges I may face. Playing the piano was not the best experience for me, and because of it, I ended up falling short in my piano course. I ultimately had to change my major to something else I was passionate about, sociology, and vocal performance became my minor. Although vocal performance wasn’t going to be my primary career choice, I still kept it close to my heart. Now, here I am working towards national certification in Applied Behavior Analysis while still recording music, traveling, and performing all over the United States! Peter Parker did it. Why can’t I?
Kyanté, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Growing up in the small town of Gibson, Louisiana, I have always had big dreams. It wasn’t until 2016 I would be able to make my dreams become a reality when I moved to the city of New Orleans. I have been singing professionally all my life from doing talent shows and theatre at a young age to pursuing a music career in college to now being an emerging R&B/soul artist. I made a name for myself by showing up and showing out in the New Orleans music scene. Open mic nights and being a background singer for notable artists in the city established a foundation for the artist Kyanté is today. With experience in classical vocal training and theatre, I come alive on stage! I have performed over 50 shows and still counting! I have performed at multiple festivals such as the infamous Taste of Soul Fest in Atlanta, GA. You may catch me at your local music venue playing with my band Kyanté & the Krü at venues such as The Fillmore in New Orleans, The Hyde, Cafe Istanbul, The House of Blues, etc. My hit single “Cloud 9” aired on New Orleans’ #1 station for Hip-hop and R&B, Q93 for over 10 consecutive weeks! With this milestone on my resume came many other blessings such as interviews, shows, features, and official music videos. I have also performed for prestigious events such as singing the National Anthem for the New Orleans Pelicans! Not only has my music reached listeners across the United States but also in the United Kingdom! My other hit single “Crown” has been gracing the UK’s airwaves on BBC Radio. I continue to grow in my craft and thrive on stage!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a singer/songwriter is my supporters. Knowing that there are people out there who can actually resonate with what I’m singing is the best feeling in the world. Especially when I’m on stage, that audience participation is everything! My alter ego kicks in when I’m performing.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn while on this creative journey is that everyone’s path is different. Do not compare yourself to others, have tunnel vision. “Focus on the reflection of you.”- Anu Da Sun
