We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kyaivah Henderson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kyaivah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
I like to believe everyone apart of my creative team has been the kindest to me. I don’t know what I’d do without my producer, supporters & fashion clients. Everyone who believes in my vision and supports Me unconditionally and organically, I can honestly say are the kindest. I’m always being treated well and elevated by my friends and family. They’re the reason I continue on. I want to spread love through my music and encouragement through my fashion, internationally.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
VOYAGE | interview
My name is Kyaivah.
Pronounced “kai • Ava”
I was born in North Carolina (where most of my bloodline resides) and raised In Jacksonville, Florida (where my heart is).
I am a singer•songwriter•poet & I also model and design clothes.
I have been Singing most of my life however only recently did I start writing poetry, my own music, recording and releasing my songs into the ether. I like to believe that my ancestors are the ones who write for me, simply because everything I say is genius and well written and I often find myself writing about a love I have yet to experience. I’d like to believe I truly have an amazing way with words. I started writing poetry in 2012 and fell in love with the way I had many beautiful things to talk about and how easily it was to express myself. A few years forward, fall of 2018, I wrote My very first song “Blue Love” which was derived from a special poem of mine called “Out Of The Blue” ironically enough.
My music and poetry are one and the same. They both have my heart and have saved my life many times. I like to create therapeutic and uplifting music and sing and write about love.
My inspiration for writing and singing came from my Mother, Kimberly Owensby.
She’s a singer and a songwriter also and has always motivated me and encouraged me to chase my dreams by being her true self and showing up for herself as well as me and my siblings.
I like to believe that my music is healing for the soul. The melodies I create encourages those who listen to love with more compassion and grace.
My next performance is 07.01 (July 1) @ studio 202 where I’ll be gracing the stage with some of my original songs and poems + also showcasing some of my latest designs. Come out to enjoy a night of Elegance + Passion! You can find the event on eventbrite & search “PRIMARY/ENERGY” Art Galleria + Fashion Show!
I hope to see you all there!
I am also releasing a new single in July titled “At Home” so stay tuned and follow me on all platforms @Kyaivah
My music is available everywhere including Apple Music, Muse, YouTube, pandora & Spotify. Keep up with my latest releases via Instagram.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I like to build my audience organically. I typically go out to creative events and network with individuals who attend as well. Meaning, communicating with other creatives genuinely and once I’ve connected with someone I almost always mention to them that I’m a singer/poet/fashion designer. I like to connect with people and allow them to see me for who I am (even if just the smallest piece of my soul) before allowing them to come into my world. I suggest to get out of the house and go to open mic nights, museums, creative events in your city. There’s many people waiting to collab with you but you’ll never know if you don’t put yourself out there and CONNECT.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Surprisingly, Facebook and Instagram bring forth the most clientele for me. I post consistently and also use boosts to help target my audience a little faster so with the help of the sponsees, I’m usually in a space where I can remain booked.
