We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kxng Coffield a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kxng, appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I think for me learning how to actually make a structured song was important for me. Initially I think I’d just load the beat up and rap, granted I still do that sometimes. But being around the group (ill.Wav) & also just being a student to the music I like it was easy to soak up those tools. The collective I’m in with JUSTOMOBBIN, 4evaSol, teejaythelegend, Antoriquo, Spaceboyicy & JodiiSoo helped me learn a lot of different aspects of music. JodiiSoo really helped me with layering my voice on certain songs. JUSTOMOBBIN helped me with networking and playing the game basically. teejaythelegend just inspiring forreal I think bro is so talented.
Kxng, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
KxngCoffield here and that’s pronounced Co•field. I’m an artist in many aspects but I identify as a rapper for the most part. Born in PG County, Maryland , grew up in Raleigh NC. So I’m from Raleigh. But I got into rap really because my mom, she’d always play 90s music around me. Funny enough in summer camp I had to be all of 7 years old or something, we had a talent show. I performed Jay-Zs verse on Rihanna “Umbrella”, I can remember right now how I had the little summer camp crowd waving their hands side to side. So that’s where it started, and inadvertently around 9th grade I found myself rapping a lot for fun. Whether it was on the back of the school bus, I’d get called over to certain lunch tables to freestyle and what not. So I’ve always had a love for music, and pertaining to beats I’d notice sounds/lyrics that most people don’t pickup the first listen. So fast forward to about late 2018, I had known 4EvaSol for awhile now. He had joined this music group and was telling me to join. Which I ended up doing but I initially just joined to model the clothes. But I had been writing poetry and posting it on instagram then. Sol told me why don’t I just rap one day while the group was recording. I hopped on a song, which I was did not do well at but, the love was strong from there. I was so determined to become a better rapper/lyricist. So we really gotta thank 4EvaSol for the push to get into rapping. Fast forward two years to 2020 when I make a big leap and purchase my own recording equipment. Thats when the ball started rolling and I was making the music I wanted to make. I was still finding myself and my style, I think only recently I found my style. So ummm yea I’ve really been dropping consistently since then for real. Me and Sol went to a party and JUSTOMOBBIN was there, sidenote me JUSTOMOBBIN, and 4EvaSol have known eachother since highschool. But we see Justo and get to talking about a group, next thing yk the collective ill.Wav is born. Where all creatives creating, we plan to drop a group project. Visuals, short films, merch and jus overall content. So stay tuned for me and ill.Wav
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Just knowing that there’s people in places that I’ve never been listening and enjoying my voice. It’s pretty rewarding to think about even it’s all of 20 listeners on something I released. I barely know 20 people so it’s always a great feeling.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I got really down and depressed recently. Like so badly that I lost confidence in my craft which is a wildly horrible feeling. But of course this sounds cliche but you gotta think positive about yourself and your craft. Like be your biggest fan. So just speaking/thinking postive things and seeing progress towards the dream helped me build the confidence back. Which definitely took resilience, cause life happens you know.
