Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kushal Shah. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kushal, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
Yes, I am definitely happier as an artist, and there are several reasons for this. I’ve always been a storyteller at heart. The stories my grandparents used to tell me and the ones I read in books fascinated me. I think that planted the seed for my passion for creating stories and narratives. Having experienced this from my childhood, it all came very naturally to me.
Around the age of 16, I started considering telling these stories through a visual medium. Movies had always been a form of entertainment and escapism for me, but as I began studying them during my undergrad in animation, they became my primary medium for storytelling.
There was a time when I wondered what it would be like to do something else. It was usually during stressful project deadlines. I remember sitting late at night, surrounded by sketches and storyboards or even while filming long hours with minimal food or rest. I would at times think about how another job might offer more stability and less stress, but one thing that I noticed about myself was the joy that I feel when I’m filming. No matter how tired or stressed I may be, I’ve never hesitated to work the next day. I’ve always felt the same excitement and happiness of being on set every single time as if it were my first. Moreover, the excitement of seeing my ideas take shape and the fulfillment of connecting with an audience through my work always felt priceless.
I believe no job is a regular job when you’re passionate about what you’re doing. When that’s the case, your entire approach to your work becomes unique, and it reflects to those around you as well. The challenges and pressures are part of the creative process, and overcoming them is what makes the journey rewarding.

Kushal, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Kushal Shah, and I am a filmmaker specializing in directing, cinematography, and producing. My journey into the world of filmmaking began with animation, followed by working as a 1st A.D. for a thesis short at the Film and Television Institute of India and then for a multiple award-winning short with the Government of India. I did a few jobs in India making commercials before coming to Atlanta for my MFA in Film. Here, I made short films, which eventually led me to produce spec commercials for luxury brands. Recently, I’ve expanded my horizons by filming and producing impactful documentaries.
I am most proud of my adaptability, discipline, and love of learning. In the ever-evolving world of filmmaking, staying updated and continuously learning is crucial. Adaptability has helped me overcome challenges, especially when things don’t go as planned. Discipline allows me to focus on what truly matters, avoid distractions, and improve overall efficiency. These qualities have been instrumental in my journey and are valuable for anyone pursuing their passion.
For potential clients, and followers, I want you to know that storytelling is at the heart of everything I do. Every project I undertake is an opportunity to connect us and evoke emotions through the art of storytelling. I try to make my work as personal as I can while keeping it at a universal theme.
I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support of my parents, the guidance from God, and the belief that my loved ones have in me. This combination of influences is the backbone of my positive outlook on life and motivates me to strive for my goals with discipline and determination, no matter the challenges that come my way.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As an artist, I believe what we all primarily want to do is express ourselves. It’s not just about the happy moments; it’s also about finding a way to channel the things we don’t like into something positive. Art gives us that outlet.
I undoubtedly bask in the attention and praise that I get when I make something good or receive any accolades, but it’s the human connection that makes this so special. The feeling I get when someone says, “Your film moved me” or “Your work made me feel a certain way,” is truly invaluable. It validates the effort and passion I put into my creations. Knowing that my films can evoke emotions and resonate with others on a deep level is what keeps me going. It’s a powerful reminder of why I chose this path and why I continue to push myself.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Absolutely, there is a particular goal driving my creative journey. As I do have dreams of being successful, reaching wider audiences, and having my work displayed globally, there’s another deeper motivation behind it all.
As a human being who won’t be on this earth forever, I want to create something that will live on long after I’m gone—a legacy. This desire to leave a lasting impact is the ultimate mission that I have in mind. I believe that creating something timeless comes from the purest of intentions and requires the hardest work. It’s this commitment to excellence and authenticity that truly drives my journey. I want my films to resonate with people, to touch their lives in a meaningful way, and to be remembered long after I’m no longer here.
