We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kurt Henry a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kurt, thanks for joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
It takes hard work dedication and a great team
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I first started managing artists around 2009-2012 it didn’t go well or not to my potential. I was very lucky that inexperienced but through those years I learned a lot about working with artists and the business. Fast forward to 2015 where I started and founded CityRok Music Group. Under that name I started to coordinate hip hop concerts.
I was still a little inexperienced but I know I needed to gain a fan base. I link up with a legendary Venue called SOB’s located in lower Manhattan and threw my first concert which was a big success holding up to 400 people. After that i started to build more of a reputation hold all female concerts which was even more of a success, having big names like Kyah Baby and Lee Mazin to name a few. On top of that i produce my on hip hop award show called “Spotlight music Awards” that was hosted by DJ Drewski of hot 97 radio in 2022.In all I’m very proud how far I came but still have a long way to go
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I met my business partner lizzy Chanel. About 2017-18 when I was hosting my radio show “cityrok radio” we were looking for a dope female host therefore we were holding guest host tryouts. She really caught my attention to how savvy and organized she was. She quickly went from guest host to host to managing CityRok radio. She was booking all the talent and making sure the show ran according to my vision. Ever since then we was inseparable. Now she help runs CityRok Music Group with me as my president all while still having her own company.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
To build a good reputation you need a great team or business partner beside you. You need that person to help take the burden of decision making. Sometimes you can’t see your own mistakes and you need someone to humble you from time to time.
Also you need drive, coordination and passion. Nothing comes easy so we must use basic skills, like planning budgeting and execution with consistency without those your doom to failure. You must set a bar not to high but never to low. Never go below the bar you set, because then you will start cutting corners and efficiency etc but you can always raise your bar as you move forward.
