We recently connected with Kung Pik Liu and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kung Pik thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Back in 2010, I felt stuck and unfulfilled in my job, yearning for something more. I took a risk and decided to start my own design business, despite having no prior business knowledge or connections. It was a daunting task, but I knew it was the only way to achieve my dream. The first few years were a struggle, filled with challenges and setbacks. However, I was determined to make it work and spent countless hours reading books on business and marketing. Finally, I landed a promising client, and with that, one lead to another. Although there were moments when I questioned my decision, I never considered going back to a full-time position. Through the ups and downs, I’ve gained knowledge, personal growth, and the satisfaction of owning my successes and failures. Today, I am grateful for the control and opportunities that come with running my own business.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Kung Pik Liu, founder of Design Angel, a branding agency for femtech and women’s health & wellness industry. With over 20 years of graphic design experience, I have spoken at accelerators such as Femtech Lab and MATTER, and my work has been featured in Communication Arts, HOW magazine and Graphic Design USA. I am recognized by a European design blog as one of the top 20 iconic graphic designers to learn from. As women founders only get 2% of all VC funding, I specialize in helping early-stage female founders become investor-ready through my Fundable Brand program.
My career pivot into femtech and women’s health and wellness space was a result of feeling stuck in my previous niche. The pandemic prompted me to reevaluate my life and career, leading me to attend a femtech demo day where I was inspired by the startup pitches that resonated with me. I knew I wanted to contribute my knowledge to help them grow, but I soon discovered that femtech founders faced a funding challenge due to the industry’s gender imbalance. This fueled my determination to help the space grow through branding.
One of my proudest accomplishments is building my personal brand online from scratch, despite having no connections or portfolio in this niche. Through consistent efforts on LinkedIn and Instagram, I quickly gained traction and credibility, growing my following from 2,000 to 10,000 and 20,000 in a year.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Over the past two years since pivoting my business, I’ve experienced feelings of failure as I started from scratch at age 41. I took on self-initiated branding projects, shared branding tips on social media, and started speaking and giving workshops. However, at times, I felt drained and even fell ill while juggling client work and content creation. I eventually took a short break to regroup, refine my system, and find a balance to continue doing both successfully.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
If only I had discovered Chris Do and his community of content creators earlier, I could have saved so much time. His teachings on business skills for creatives are unparalleled and not found in traditional schooling. Moreover, the supportive community allowed me to grow and develop greater confidence in my work.
